New RN Graduates

U.S.A. New York

I would appreciate if anyone could inform new graduates RN about how to obtain an entry level job (first RN job) in New York. Thank you very much in advance from all of us, the New Graduates RNs.

My best advice would be to start sending your resumes to all hospitals you are interested in, look out for hospitals offering special orientation programs in specialties and attend conferences where hospitals will be in attendance, dress well and carry many copies of your resume.

Thank you very much. A few years ago it was not so hard for new nurses but now with the economy everything is different. I guess that's call bad luck. Anyway we'll keep fighting, thanks again and all the best to you.

Thanks, same to you. You will find something, don't worry. The economy isn't that bad, especially for RNs.

hi lady! i would like to ask if there's a chance i could land a job in nyc, using a tourist visa with NCLEX and CGFNS? tnx!

Hi Clement,

Try nursing homes. Have you tried the recruiting agencies? I talked with some couple days ago, and emailed my resume. this is my new step of job searching since nothing seems to be working,,, although I've got 2 interviews so far,,,,,but still. I'm so frustrated of applying ,,,,,, i need a job.

hey dean, do you have ny state license?

I am a new grad also and actually just moved to the state from TN. I am still waiting for my license to be transferred but it should not be more than 2 more weeks. I am just very frustrated that I have applied for so many job in the area and have received no calls or interviews. does anyone have any advice on what to do next? should I just wait for my license to come through or should I go in person now and take my resume to local hospitals? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for good hospitals in Buffalo? Thanks for any advice, I am just so down and frustrated...

Thanks all for your replies. I am in NY city. There are no jobs for new grads, especially Associate-new grads. Only experienced RNs are wanted here, others are on their own. Even the never-heard-of-smallest-facilities are requiring experience. Did someone say nursing shortage? What a lie that was/is.

Hi Clement!! I totally understand your feelings. I am a foreign educated New York Licensed new grad male RN since March 2009. I was desperate to find a job as new grad RN , I applied to all NY and south NJ Hospitals, Medical Centers, Nursing Homes even Home Care Nursing Agency. No success ...need an experience at list 1 year that's what i herd ..And believe me i was at the bottom of the list for any available RN positions ...I am foreign educated...Finally i got call from Agency and i got my first per diem RN position !!!!!!! I am still can't believe that's happened...:yeah::yeah::yeah: after 7 month of job hunting :banghead: everywhere... Do not give up, be positive all the time, do not let you self get into depression.. you will get the job soon!!!! I am sure!!!

I am an LPN and I am so scared. I have 10 years old son to take care of. Nobody seems interested in hiring new graduate, when this nightmare will stop. Everyday, school is sending me paper, needed money (not that much), for this, for that. I am so ashamed to still leaving under my mother's roof at my age. Nobody want to give us a chance, everybody was new graduate too. I want to start working, so I can go and continue my education to be an RN. I have to put on hold for now.

Oh God, help us.

 I graduated in Dec. '08 had a baby in Feb (went through my last semester of nursing school "preggo"!!!) and, and got my license this past august...and I am too frustrated with all this B.S. about how almost everywhere requires you to have experience ....when like I've said a million times: "How am I ever going to get any if nobody will hire me as a new grad!!!" My motivation is my son who keeps my hopes up and thinking positive is always good for you....I just need someone to give me an opportunity! I still work as a CNA and its just so frustrating to continue to do so when I have an RN license which I worked so hard for!!!....and the most frustrating part of it all is that ive been working at this facility (NH) for several yrs now and they refuse to hire me as an RN w/o any experience but yet recently i was told i would be allowed to work as an LPN instead!!! and only on night shift when you ar practically left all alone to care for 40 pts by yourself!!! Are they setting me up for failure or what??!! i worked to hard to let somebody try to belittle me....i have an RN license!! If i had an LPN license ...i would have considered it...but that i thought was just wrong!! so i continue with the same job still job searching! Lets pray for a miracle!!
