New grad who is an international student!

U.S.A. New York

Hi everyone

I will be graduating in May 2007, and plan to take my NCLEX exam within a month and get my NY license. I have an excellent GPA and recommendations. My only problem is I am an international student here, and I need a sponsorship to work in this country after I graduate. Currently I am planning to apply for jobs in NY metro area and Long island as I want to work immediately after I get my license. Most of the hospitals I contacted told me that they don't sponsor to international students. Though my preference is to work in the New York city area, I am willing to relocate. I heard that NY license is valid in most of the states. Does anyone have any info regarding hospitals either in New York or in other states which sponsor (either H1 or Greencard) to international students. I would really really appreciate any kind of suggestions and helps regarding this matter!!

Thank you

stac123,

did you try Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ - North Shore) in long island?? my friend was an international student and when she graduated she can only find 2 hosiptals that are willing to sponser her and LIJ is one of them, and she got the job and has work there for a year now (still waiting for her greedcard) maybe you can try there. Also there's lots of nursing homes that are willing to sponser if you like long term care...

good luck and let us know how it goes! ;)

Hi. I am in a similar position as you are and it doesn't look good for us . I don't know if you are aware of the retrogression that is in effect since Nov 2006. That means that there are no visas available for international students or foreign-born nurses in the US. We do not know when this retrogression will be lifted. Until more visas become available by the US congress, there will be no one filing for our green cards. If you are on an F1 visa you can avail of the OPT for one year. I cannot even use that since i am on an H4. Good luck to you.

Hi Drizzle,

Thank you for your reply. I did send my resume to LIJ., but they told me they will not be sponsoring any foreign nurses this year. I think your friend is very lucky! I have been sending my resume to every hospital here, But so far it has been very disappointing. I may have to start considering nursing homes as an option, even though it is not what I want to start with. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I am exactly in the same situation as you are...No OPT. because this is my second undergrad and I have already used up my OPT. I heard that this whole retrogression issue will be lifted soon, and it is temporary. But nobody knows when. It is quite frustratingL When I came to nursing school I had so much hope. I talked to some of the hospitals, and they told me when they sponsor foreign educated nurses they already have an experience as RN, but they can't sponsor new grad. Any way good luck with your job search process!

I have been exploring that website. I think I need to have my license before I apply, Or at least have some kind of RN experience in other countries. But thanks for the information.

stac123,

i am sorry to hear your situation, i can't believe that... and yes my friend is a pretty lucky girl then.. did you even get to have an interview before they told you that? ..... plz dun give up! :nuke:

one thing i want to point out tho... i am not sure if you knew this but i think since you are an international student usually the hosptial wouldn't even consider an international student if they didn't pass NCLEX yet... meaning you should at least get your license first before applying for jobs, it will increase the chance... my friend spent months to be prepare for the nclex and then got the license before she apply to any hopsitals....

i am sorry i didn't point this out before it wasn't on my mind at that time when i made that suggestion. :crying2:

if you can get a hospital to sponser you that's great but if not LTC is another whole new experience and most imp, a good chance for you to stay here, at least keep yourself legal to be here and wait for the chance to switch to hospital later... :stone

i am sorry i didn't get to help you out....

goodluck for the rest of your jobsearch and keep us update!!:nuke:

I got in touch with hospitals in Phoenix and Tucson, AZ + University of Florida Hospital and they all sponsor GCs
