Hey all,

I've been lurking around the site and have learned alot about what to expect the first week of school. We have orientation this next week and will start our first day on Sept. 3. I'm so excited. Do you all have any advice for new students? I already purchased my books and have started some of the modules to get ahead. we have a 8 week course before they let us free to work on patients. I have worked as a CNA for about 6 years in SNF and Acute Care settings so I feel prepared. We shall see. I would appreciate any advice that you guys have. Wish me luck.

Trudi.....welcome to Allnurses! Glad to have you aboard with us! We'll take real good care of you, as we do our other nursing students, so if you ever need help along the way, you're in the right place to receive that help. :kiss

The best advice this old nurse can give you is to always be yourself, give the best to yourself, take in what matters, and dump what doesn't, don't forget to enjoy your family each day...without them...your life may start to feel like one big 'STUDYHALL'! :chuckle

Trudi:

Be very careful when you are in clinicals to do the skills exactly as you are taught at nursing school and not as you have been doing them. That can get you in the worst trouble. Sometimes it is harder for people who have experience as CNA's to get the hang of clinicals because they must unlearn and then relearn. Critical behaviors through nursing school are so strict that you must do exactly as they teach you. Also, any skills that you have not yet learned in lab be sure and do not do in the clinicals even if you do them at work. VERY IMPORTANT because your malpractice insurance through the school will only cover the skills you have learned through the school and you will be graded on those critical behaviors.

Best of luck!

Hi Trudi and welcome.......... I agree with the comment to do exactly as they teach you........... also, remember that on tests........ they want "textbook" answers and NOT "real world" answers........ Good luck to you.
