New School Nurse

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am very excited to be starting my dream job as a school nurse very soon. I am looking forward to learning from you, laughing with you and sharing with you.

Congratulations! Yes, this is a great place for learning, support, and encouragement! Hope you will love your new role!

Thank you all for the warm WELCOME :x3:

How is it so far?! I'm starting training Monday but it's only for a half day as a fill in nurse from a staffing agency. Any tips for new nurses? PS I'm with one child the whole day not seeing multiple!

I'm new to school nursing, too (Elementary and Middle School, 3 schools, a total of 1,900 kids). AND I LOVE IT!! My peers are fantastic, the days fly by, the students keep it interesting, the pay and hours are great for me, and I have summers and school holidays off. Wow!!

Before I knew better, I thought the role of the School Nurse was primarily dealing with playground injuries - I discovered it's IZs, screenings, Epi-Pens, Diabetic care, IEPs, Health/Care Plans, Health Assistant oversight, meetings, relationship building, advocacy, and so much more. I work for a city school district so each school has a Health Assistant to manage children's visits to the Health Office, allowing me to focus on other endeavors.

i predict you will love it, too. Where are you located? What grades/schools will you be assigned?

All the best in your new job!

I just started training and boy oh boy the nurse's office is a busy place!!! Lots to learn, but I'm so excited to have this opportunity. Good luck to you with your training too! I am sure we will be "seeing" each other around *here*

Welcome! It is so different from bedside nursing. You will love the independence and the kids!
