New to Pittsburgh area

Published

My husband just got relocated to Pittsburgh from Texas. I am an RN-BSN and have just applied for my Pennsylvania license. We just found a town home in Canonsburg. Does anyone have any input on the hospitals, outpatient centers, clinics for jobs? My husband will be gone 3 weeks out of the month so day jobs are definitely wanted. Any tips on places to eat, shop, entertainment, gyms, and child care would also be helpful.

Welcome to the area! How much time have you spent in Pittsburgh? Canonsburg is about 35 minutes outside of the city so theres "less" to do that in the city, but its still not too far away, all highway driving to the way there.

As far as gyms go, there is a place in Canonsburg called Alexanders, great gym, great customer service and reasonable rates.

Shopping: There is a GREAT outlet mall near canonsburg, has a saks, brooks brothers, gap, jcrew.... good place, There's also a good mall about 10 miles away called South Hills village.

Nearby towns that have good restaurants and fun-ish stuff to do:

Mt Lebanon (great shopping restaurants and hair salons, bout 10 miles away)

Robinson (big box retail center, kind of a pain in the ass to navigate but has literally every store one would need)

Downtown (easy to navigate to, theatre, music, sports events)

Burgettstown (about 20 miles away is one of Pittsburgh's largest music venues, large lawn / stadium style venue that hosts big ticket bands)

There's a lot to do in Pittsburgh, I'm sure you'll have no problem finding your way around.

Also, with the oil and gas drilling going on in Pennsylvania, there are ALOT and I mean A LOT of Texans living in Canonsburg, so you may meet more Texy friends than you think.

As far as jobs go: I think WPAHS (West Penn Allegheny Health System) has more saturation in the Canonsburg Washington area, but UPMC is far more dominant in Allegheny County. A google search of both of those will take you to their job pages where you can apply directly. The listings are not only for hospitals but for outpatient centers as well.

Hope some of this helps

Thanks Leo! Yes your post has helped. I will be looking for daycare next to accommodate nurse hours, which is hard to do. Going from ER/critical care to more normal hours sounds like a nice break right now. Pittsburgh is beautiful compared to our West Texas desert, I know this will be a fun move for us.
