HELLO EVERYONE, I AM A NEW NURSING STUDENT AND HAVE NOT STARTED MY CLASSES YET BUT, I AM VERY VERYNERVOUS GOING INTO MY CLASSES. IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME?

THANK YOU

Study and don't fall behind on your work. Nursing school is hard but it's worth it in the end (at least that's what I'm told ;))

Good luck and congrats!

And NEVER be afraid to ask questions. good lucK!!!

Specializes in orthopaedics.

don't fall into the cliques that may form. stay true to yourself and be friendly to everyone. you are there for you. study hard and don't fall behind in your assingments. sometimes it may seem impossible to keep up with the reading if you can't get it done at least skim the chapter before lecture and read what was presented after lecture. take your own notes, its also helpful to tape lecture. try to be organized from the begining.

Specializes in med/surg/tele/neuro/rehab/corrections.

Yes, don't type in all capital letters because it means that you are yelling :lol2:

As for school, I found it helpful to sit up front. There were too many distractions in the back of the classroom and many times I couldn't hear the instructor. Good luck in school! :)

I like that tape recorder idea. I myself am a new nursing student. I think I'll try that when I start classes! Thanks

Specializes in NICU.

Study hard & don't fall behind but remember to always take some time out just for you. Have fun w/ friends, family, or just by yourself but every once in a while do something non school related.

While I took all my preq's, especially Micro, I would of died with out my tape recoreder. I start in my LPN program July 16 and already have the batteries in it and extra in my tote bag. Good luck with class, make friends and ask questions. I look at it this way, ask questions in class with other student nurses so later you wont look stupid in front of your employer or charge nurse. I cant wait!!!

Read Patricia Benner's book "From Novice to Expert." This is a wonderful overview of the development of nurses. Many of the traumatic emotional experiences you will endure will be caused by instructors taking too literally the ideas in this book, which is intended to be more descriptive than prescriptive. Knowing this will help you lay back and take the long view. Map your progress in even smaller chunks than Benner. After you realize that you are going to nursing school to learn basic nursing skills, not to become a real nurse ready to work your first day alone right out of school, it should occur to you that neither are you going to school to pass the NCLEX. The NCLEX is its own animal. I took the Kaplan Complete, and studying according to the strategies they teach was perfect preparation for that stage. Then you'll have to develop first-year survival and adaptation skills that are yet different from nursing school and NCLEX survival skills. At every stage, you'll need a different conceptual tool kit, like job search and interview skills. I've seen lots of folks do great up 'til they hit the wall, then they're miserable. Instead, all you'll have to do is figure out what different space you've gotten into and develop a new tool kit to deal with it.

First of all, congratulations on getting in. Second don't be nervous, prioritize well, and make study groups (its amazing how different your notes can be and sometimes it is good to divide and conquer in a class that the professor speaks super fast). Also, you might want to get the book Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students by Patricia Nugent and Barbara Vitale. One of my teachers required we get this and it actually helped! Good luck!

Good luck and congratulations.

Specializes in Long Term Care.

Do your reading, a lot of people made it through the first semester just skimming through the chapters. Once we got to Med/Surg in the second semester welost over 1/2 our class. We started out with 47, we only have 24, and 7 of those are LPN-RN that started this semester with us. Good Luck!!!
