New Nurse, New Job, Advice Needed!

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm a recently licensed nurse (passed boards 11/29/16). I've been applying for jobs everywhere and just landed my first position in LTC/Rehab that I start next week. Very nervous. According to the DON I will be responsible for 20-25 patients depending on the census and will be also rotating to the rehab unit if needed. My shift will be from 7a-3p. If anyone can give me pointers on what to expect, best ways to time manage for med passes, etc, I would appreciate any and all advice.

Signed,

Nervous Newbie

Congratulations on getting your license! I'm currently working in a LTC with 35-40 census with 3 nurses on the floor. 1 charge, 1 med pass and 1 supervisor. Here are some tips for you.

1. Bring post it notes because there will be a time 4-5 resident will be asking for pain meds all at the same time.

2. I usually turn around the blister pack meds of the resident that i'm done with so I won't get confused. I do this whenever they float me to a different floor.

3. Always bring a granola bar or something to eat while passing meds.

4. Ask your nurse or floor manager fot tips on your floor.

Critical- ask for help/advice from your co-workers when you start and continue to do so when you think you need help. Don't be afraid to ask - relax and congratulations.

Watch what the nurses do, especially for your shift, when you are orienting. When you get on your own, try to organize yourself in the same way. As you get to know your residents and their personal routines, you will find your own methods.
