New nurse HIPAA violation?

Hi, thanks in advance for your input.  Some colleagues and I were discussing how newer nurses who care for a patient will sometimes follow up on what happened with the patient on their next shift, for learning purposes.  If they cared for the patient for the first shift, then the next time they work they check the patient chart but are not caring for the patient that day, is that a HIPAA violation?  Thank you.

If that patient is not assigned to you that day, yes that's a HIPAA violation.  I think there's an exception if you have additional charting that you missed (consult your institution re:time limit to add to chart)

If the HIPAA police checked up on every conversation at the nurses station, no doubt most nurses would be suspended from their jobs if that action is on the first line of employer punishment for such violations.
