Hello Everyone! I'm a Filipino Nurse and my Husband is in US Military and we are currently stationed here in Japan. I am planning to take the NCLEX soon and I choose New Mexico State because I guess they are not requiring for job experience or clinical practice, however I want to clarify with you guys if its true. Thank you!

As I also replied to your other questions in another thread, you should choose a state that you and your husband think might be the most possible move back into the States, NOT because of having to go thru TOEFL or CGFNS or a required local PH license.

The reason is that no matter where you get your RN license from you're still going to have to meet the "new" state's minimum requirements anyways, even if you have years of nursing experience. It will ALWAYS be required of international applicants to meet that state's requirements as if applying as a first-timer.

Maybe if you guys think your husband's next move is his home state then you should apply there or wherever you think there stands a higher percentage of settling into. Many states don't require any experience or clinical practice. Make a list of potential states, look up (Google) that state's BON requirements, look at the International section!

Save yourself future disappointments and frustration for NOT choosing the "wrong" state. I highly suggest that you take the time to read the many threads here and get your list going.

Hello Steppybaby!

Thank you for your response! I choose New Mexico because that was our last base back in US but we are not trying to go back there. However they are included in Compact State so If I do the New Mexico then I still can work in different states that is included in compact state. The reason why I cant choose one state because being in the Military we cant choose what we want next after this base.

thank you again for all the information! God bless you :)

Compact state license is only valid if you are a legal permanent resident of that state. If you don't legally live in NM you will not have a compact license; you will be issued a single state license only valid NM.

Hi JustBeachyNurse!

Wow! Thank you for that information, now I need to find new state. God bless you!

Best answer is to apply for the state where you wish to live & work.

Compact licenses are only valid if you are a permanent resident of that state. Plus if you live in a compact state you cannot apply to a different compact state for a license. For example if you live in VA you must apply in VA and you will get a NCL license that you can work in MD or DE but you cannot live in VA and instead apply to MD or DE because you don't like the requirements of VA ( your application will be denied outright as per the nursing license compact rules).

Just like if you live in VA you can't apply for a MD drivers license because its cheaper.

I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions about the nursing license compact.
