Last month I secured a new job in another organization. While I am very excited to get started in my new job role, my start date isn't for another 3 months. I'm wondering how much notice I should give my current employer of my intent to resign? I have a couple concerns about submitting my notice this far in advance, specifically I have a PTO request between now and my end date that could feasibly be denied if they know I'm leaving 3 weeks after return from my vacation. The other concern I have is that the two organizations have a work contract together that I will be directly involved in, and I'm a little worried that if I don't discuss my plan to join the other organization that someone from that office will spill the beans.
I know a 2 week notice of resignation is the standard accepted practice, but it doesn't seem very professionally courteous. But I also don't want to give too much notice and risk a PTO denial. A 4 or 6 week notice seems acceptable? What are your thoughts?

Double check your resignation policy- you may find that you must give more than just two weeks to remain eligible for rehire. My facility requires 4 weeks.

A months notice sounds very fair. Maybe more once you get your PTO request back.

Like Rose Queen I had to give 4 weeks notice- my old facility required anyone with a professional license to give 4 weeks.

I would take into account the size of my organization and the politics/working relationships. I would first check policy because as others pointed out some organizations require different amounts of notice to leave in good standing. I would also consider the politics of the organization. Are they likely to cancel your shifts or let you go once you turn in your notice? Can you afford to be off work for a time between jobs? Do you want a week or two free?
I would not turn it in before your vacation time is approved unless you could move the vacation to just before you start the other job.
