New job as Ambulatory Clinic RN

Hello Allnurses:

I got a position as a Staff Nurse Ambulatory Clinic with the County Hospital. I have been working Med-Surg at a smaller rural hospital for the last two years. At my new job, I will be working with Residents and overseeing Medical Assistants. From what I have heard already, the MA's at this particular clinic can be pretty mean to the RN's! One NP told me that they pride themselves in getting rid of the RN's!!! I know I will definitely enjoy working M-F, all weekends and holidays off, including my birthday! I'm not so sure how to handle my new supervisory position with the MA's. I am all about being professional, being a team player, and treating others the way I would want to be treated. I don't know if these MA's have just come across some really rude RN's who think they can boss everybody around. Well I don't plan to be like this. Any advice for a nurse switching from Acute care to Ambulatory clinic? Any advice for working with the MA's?

Hello hrae, it sounds like my experience. I started med-surg and the went to county ambulatory clinic. I have some advice, you will love ambulatory you will be triaging, patient teaching, assisting providers you will be busy busy busy, I worked in family practice buy a telephone triage book and dermatology book it really helped me when I transition to clinic. Now I always kept my hospital experience, I worked registry weekends. I have been a nurse for 17 years and that's one thing that has helped me when I decided to do other specialties. You don't want to burn that bridge lol. As far as the MA it's not true. I have worked with some really nice ma and not so nice, what I have learned is that if people don't like you it's not because of who you are it's who they are. You will be working closely with am and your day will be nice if you get along with them. I always helped them if I was not busy or at the end of the day help them stock, help with vitals and they will help you.

Thanks nursejuvie for your comment! It is a relief to hear it from somebody in a similar experience. I really hope I love my job, especially because I am taking a pay cut for it.
