New Grad & No one will hire me

U.S.A. New Jersey

I have never applied to so many jobs and not receive a response. Follow up letters and phone calls have been made. references used. what else can I do? I need to start working. Any advice?

I am truly beginning to believe, I just wasted away 30000 dollars and 5 yrs of school for nothing. I was so excited to become a nurse, something I have always wanted and finally had a chance at it. I thought nursing was different than your average positions. nurses are suppose to help each other, teach each other, and grow together, what happened?

NJ nursing shortage? hospitals advertise they will take new nurses on their career sites, but they lie. All they want are experienced nurses. well guess what, when you fall short of staff in the few years the industry is predicting, all their will be are NEW NURSES! TRAIN THE NEW GRADS NOW AND START PREPARING FOR THE RETIREMENT LOSS NOW! I don't understand.

Thanks for letting me vent. :)

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and I could empathize with the original poster. I live in the Trenton NJ area, with lost of hosptials. I graduated with a BSN last May but haven't found a job till now. I also have another degree in engineering from twenty some years ago, but that did not help me at all with my job search, I was even tempted to take it out of my resume. I found that nurse recruiters at this time (whose calling cards I have from a Feb job fair) don't even call you or email you back.I have started just applying for any position that do not specify yrs of experience ("unspecified") or state "1" year.

My biggest mistake in job hunting was not cutting class last April to go on an interview the recruiter when she asked "Is that time good for you?" which I emailed back "Unfortunately I have a class on that day". That interview was for a position I thought was "sure-fire", since the manager of the unit already interviewed me, and I spent 40 hrs shadowing nurses on the unit, I had already sent transcripts and recom. letters. She never called or emailed me back and needless to say, countless phone calls, letters did not work. Nurse recruiters have all the power.

Now I am in the same boat as all other graduates who dide not look for jobs before graduation. No new grad positions in hospitals in a 45 minute driving radius. St. Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick specifically requested to apply only after we passed the NCLEX but no response from them either. Student loan payments are due November, so I am in quitre a pinch.

I graduated in May, and starting applying for jobs in Feb before graduation and I still didn't get any interviews until after I had my license in July. Many did get hired before graduation but they already worked at the hospitals or knew someone. I just started orientation 3 weeks ago, so it took over 3 months after graduation to find a job.

Hello all! I passed NCLEX in Aug but still waiting for my NJ license by endorsment. I've been looking for a job a while now but hospitals are just no go for a new grads  At least I got a job offer from a home health care agency to be a visiting nurse, and now, after reading all these posts I think I might accept it. Working in a hospital is my dream but unfortunately we still have to pay our loans and bills...

Good luck to you new grads! I hope we'll all find our dream jobs soon :loveya:

Just curious: most home health care agencies want you to have 2 years of experience, or at least the ones I've checked out. The agency that made you the offer is willing to take you right out of school? That's good to know!

sharpie1983, I am interested to know which home health care agency would hire a new grad... thanks...

Specializes in Emergency.

Somerset Medical Center, in Somerville, is hiring new grads.

Apply online at http://www.somersetmedicalcenter.com/body.cfm?id=470 and then followup with a phone call.

Very glad my school pushed us to start applying for jobs in December even though graduation wasn't until the following June.

Bayada Nurses Home Care hire new grad LPN/RN with 0-1 years experience. They even have a sign on bonus for some new grad nurse jobs.:yeah:

I've been working for a Home Health agency as a receptionist for almost 2 years, now they offer me a job. There are many companies like mine: bayada nurses, loving care, care finders, H&H etc. Just search online guys. There are 2 types of nursing: skilled and a home health aide supervision.

I have heard through the grapevine, that some area hospitals are now hiring again and hiring new grads. Ocean Med, Kimball, Monmouth med, Riverview and Robert Wood Johnson.

This is for Ocean and Monmouth Counties.

Good luck to everyone :)

Hi JerseyGirl73,

I actually applied to their positions online recently. I decided to make a packet including my resume, degrees, letter of recommendation. I actually want to drop it of so i can make a personal attempt. Do you think I should give it to the hospital or to meridian health center talent search office?

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

I'm not JerseyGirl73(she hadnt been on this site since 2019) but I personally know a Meridian recruiter. She has told me Do NOT bring anything to the hospital the recruiters & HR are all off site in the corporate and satellite offices. They do not accept any paperwork unsolicited and only accept online applications. Their recruiters do go to many of the local job fairs and that is one of the few ways that you can hand over information personally. You can try calling the center for talent selection to make arrangements to drop something off (they may tell you to send it electronically) but showing up unannounced is not recommended.

ETA this thread is nearly 4 years old so much of the info is likely outdated.
