I just graduated from LVN school and I really want to do the excelsior program. Is there a certain amount of experience you should have before you start?

Hi. There are several EC students on the Distance Learning forum we have here at Allnurses. I'll move your post there for more views.
Good luck.

It's certainly helpful if you do have the experience, but it's not totally necessary. Some people have found it to be somewhat of a detriment to have lots of experience when doing the CPNE because you're being tested as a brand new RN, not a experienced nurse, though the confidence that exudes from such a nurse is definitely not bad! I've heard some say that it is a good idea to do it straight up out of LPN/LVN school. You have the "teacher way" still emblazoned in your noggin, which is a very good thing. You can do it if you have some nerves of steel!

chances are that when you get done with your required pre-courses and theory exams you will have been able to rack up some work experience. if it were me i would not hesitate to start right out of lvn school for just this reason. good luck

I am currently in LPN school and am also wanting to enroll in excelsior as soon as I am finished (still quite a ways to go). I just wanted to know if you have to have passed the NCLEX PN first before applying or is documentation of completion sufficient. Just curious.
To enter as an LPN you must provide a copy of your license.

I think it is an excellent idea to start Excelsior right after LPN school. The nursing tests are just more tests. Much of the material will still be fresh from school. The only challenge is really the CPNE, which is challenging to everyone anyway. While you are clear and relatively fresh from school, you can set up your mini mock patient area and practice for your CPNE without being so hampered by on the job habits. I say go for it.

I'd apply as soon as I got my license.

This is exactly what I did! I graduated Last August 2007 and took my boards Sept 2007. Took my first nursing test Nov 1st 2007. Enrolled in the Nursing program Dec 12, 2007. Worked hard and completed all my nursing exams May 29th. Applied for the CPNE June 4th and Passed the CPNE with no repeats Dec 5th 2007. I completed most of the requirements within the year. Now just waiting to take information Literacy Jan 5th. I really goofed on this one. It is the only thing right now holding me back. My friend that I graduated with in LPN also did the program with me and started in January and finished Nov 2nd with a GN behind her name. So I said this to say that a new grad from LPN school would do great in this program. I am living proof!
