Specializes in ICU.

I just passed my boards and I know I would like to work in Critical Care. What do I need to have (Certificates, degrees, .....) in order for me to get a job in Critical Care?

Any help is appreciated :)

Forget all that stuff. 'certificates' and 'degrees' and 'super-duper awards' and 'i'm qualified' certificates dont mean anything...when speaking of new-grads (as far as getting hired...they're personally enriching...but).

A new grad is a new grad.

Just apply. ICUs (as any other area...especially those with shortages) will on occaision hire freshling-eager-grads. If you're lucky...there you are. Your critical-care identity/persona and your abilities will develope in time.

If you're a not-so-lucky eager-grad, the best way to get around it (and into the ICU) is to take any other hospital position and transfer to ICU later.

Specializes in CCRN.

You can also look for, and apply to, a critical care fellowship. Many of the hospitals in this area offer a fellowship for new grads. You rotate through the critical care areas, attend provided classes, and then upon the completion are often offered a position. I agree with the above poster, simply apply to every position you find. I worked as a tech in the ICU during nursing school and then started my nursing career in critical care and have loved it. It is not for everyone but it can be done.

Specializes in Trauma, Neuro, M&S ICU.

I live in TX and we have 2 major hospital systems. One of which will not be hiring anytime soon. I currently work as a tech for one in the ED, and I appied to the Trauma ICU, and BAM!!! I got it. I am so happy and understand that I will have so much to learn, but hey! Go and attack! With that attitude you don't need to know anything, just go for what you want. Good Luck!!
