Hello all the amazing nurses!!!
I am new grad currently working in Toronto but always dreamt of becoming travel nurse. So, I took an offer from travel nursing agency called atlas healthcare. As far as my understanding of this agency is that basically covers most of the states in USA and Canada. Because this is all new to me, it is nerve wracking and stressful process to start off. So, I was wondering if there is anyone out there who is in same boat as i am? I would like to know how they are coping and getting all the necessary informations to have a smoother application process. I would like to hear from you lovely people who has more experiences and understanding in this topic. Any advices???
Merry christmas and Jolly new year.

Not a travel nurse yet but I've been stalking the travel nurse groups on Facebook for a while. As I understand it, travel agencies usually require at least 1-2 years of experience before placing someone at one of their contracted facilities. If you have a Facebook account, you should join several groups and haunt their pages until you get a good understanding.

I feel that a new grad in a travel position is a tough row to hoe. To put it bluntly, it's a recipe for failure.

New grads in travel positions do not equal a happy outcome.

This is a terrible idea. My travel agency position included an orientation consisting of a single online test for EMR competency, a med calc exam, and one 12-hour shift to learn the floor. Not feasible for a new graduate. Don't do it. You need a full 8-12 week orientation to your first job.

Do you understand that as a travel nurse you get one SHIFT of orientation and then are expected to be a fully functioning member of the team? This as a HORRIBLE idea for a new grad. Get a couple years of experience under your belt first.

So Atlas Healthcare hired you as a new grad? How do they figure you are going to get your training?

That sounds like a terrible idea on so many levels. Why do so many new grads want to travel? Get your experience & then travel. You will be happy you did.
