New Grad RN- may have to change jobs in 6m

Published

Hi all,

This is my first post. I just graduated in Jan 2008 and hope to take the NCLEX towards the end of Feb and have a job lined up beginning in mid March. I recently found out that I may have to move come September of this year due to a family issue. It will probably be out of state. what should I do? How bad it is to move before you have dedicated on year to your place of work? can the hospital keep you from leaving? I haven't signed anything yet, just an oral ok that I wanted the job. Any advice?

Thanks a lot,

If you've signed no long term contract, then you should be able to leave when you want. A good manager will understand that life happens, and people move. I personally would let him or her know early on, just out of courtesy, and I think it would look good on you. As long as your performance is adequate and your evaluations are good, you should have no problem finding a new job. Oh and Good Luck on the NCLEX! Welcome to nursing!

I would take the job and then see what happens. Life is all about change and any good manager will accept that life and change both occur often in the workforce.

I would error of the side of caution and not tell your new manager anything about a pending move in Sept until you know for sure you must move. Again, things change and you don't want to work up your manager in March for a possible move that may or may not take place in Sept.

Good luck on the NCLEX and enjoy your new job!!!!

Yes, do NOT tell your manager that you may be moving later. Giving them 2 weeks advanced notice is enough. I used to work as a Nursing Assistant at a hospital. There were a bunch of new hires. There were these two new grads whom in their first jobs, did very well at the job, however, after one year, they had to move, both went along with their boyfriend when their boyfriends changed jobs. We were happy for them. They worked really hard in the job. So, it was not like they "OWED" the management anything for ditching the job after one year, believe me they worked their be**** off. They got their experience there, but the management also had two excellent workers who contributed at the times that they were there.

Definitely don't say anything for now. I actually did the same exact thing you are about to do. I started a job in one state, had to move after 3 months, and then got a new job in another state. The next employer is ALWAYS curious why you left a first job, and relocation is probably the best reason. Remember, you're talking about 6 months from now. That's a long time. Leaving is easy.......getting another job later on is another.

Good luck on NCLEX! Take a great review course!
