New Grad...2 offers

Published

So I posted in the salary and negotiation thread that I was just about to accept my first offer...well I just received another offer today! This new offer is from one of my clinical rotations and I honestly thought I was going to work there right after graduation but it fell through and I pursued other options. I am an AGNP and they are both in the SNF setting.

Offer #1

Large healthcare system working with Geriatric team

Salary 98k, no bonus

On-call every 4th week, no compensation

Health/Dental/Vision

401k with 4% match

28 days PTO

6 holidays

5 CME days and 1500

Offer #2

Subsidiary of a large insurance company

Salary 106k, with potential bonus paid quarterly

No call, no w/e

Health/Dental/Vision

401k with 4% match

23 days PTO

8 holidays

4 CME days and 2000

With offer number one I will be the first NP with this team although all docs have worked with NP's before. They understand that I am a new grad and wouldn't be expected to take call for 3 months. I am not expected to see a certain amount of patients a day rather it depends on acuity. Offer number 2 is a more defined role, with intense documentation that is scrutinized. I have 1 classmate that started a month ago and raves about the support and training provided.

I'm torn between the two because I know what to expect with offer two but feel offer one may be a slower pace but I don't know because currently there isn't anyone doing it. Plus compensation with number two is better and there is no call.

Any input is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I am surprised you are even considering number 1 based on the financials and that you know someone at number 2 who enjoys it. As for the pace of job #1 I can guarantee you "that not expected to see a certain amount of patients a day rather it depends on acuity" will translate into a very high acuity every day and them working you like a dog as such is the way of healthcare now, all healthcare.

You bring up a great point Jules A. I think I'm so excited to even be in a situation with two offers that I'm missing some of the negatives.

I tried to negotiate with offer 1 and was shut down quickly so I think it would be pointless to say hey can you match this offer. I'm just nervous of making the wrong decision.

Offer number 2 all the way! It sounds great, honestly.

If you really think #1 would be the better fit for you absolutely ask if they can match the offer. What's the worst they can say? No? So what? Do not be afraid to hear the word no. Its just a word and if you don't ask you definitely will never get which I think is the reason so many NPs work for such terrible wages. Ask not and receive not!

Also don't underestimate the call and weekend component. I make approx $25 an hour for call which adds up to a nice few extra dollars and lessens my aversion to it although there are some jobs where it is included in the base rate. Make sure your bottom line reflects the call time that will be involved. Weekends, holidays, evenings require a premium. I get between 15-20% extra for weekends. I don't mind weekends but don't do it unless I'm getting paid extra.

What I have seen is many NPs don't seem to like anything more than M-F 9-5 and if that is you keep that in mind because weekends and call will get very old.

I countered offer one so fingers crossed for good news! They don't offer any type of bonus incentives for NP's or PA's so the only thing they can offer is a bump in salary. I do feel this opportunity will be a better learning experience, 3 docs and myself, so hopefully they bump the offer up! Thanks for advice Jules A!

Offer #1 sounds like it will be a better learning experience but weekend call, pay, no bonus structure, etc aren't great. I'm with Jules A on this one, although if you tell #1 thanks but no thanks, you're going to accept a better offer, you might be surprised with a quick counter offer.

Offer #2 is what I would pick...agree #1 is gonna be fraught with high acuity, long hours, etc..ultimately leading to you looking for a new position.

Update: Offer one came back with salary 100k and 15k retention bonus after 15 months.

Not bad at all. I just hope you don't end up kicking yourself a few months in knowing you have to stick around for 15 months when you have a friend working for offer #2 that straight up tells you how much they like it. The weekend call once a month sucks too.

Number 2 sounds best what did u choose

Went with offer #1, amd couldn't be happier!
