Hello nurses!
I just graduated December 20,2009 as a RN, BSN and it is so tough to find a job right now.
I live in the Silicon Valley and it is like a war zone here! I am willing to relocate, possibly to Florida or Oregon but my priority is still in California. Any tips on what I can do? I am applying to volunteer at a Diabetes Society. I am also in the process of getting my application reviewed for RN transtion program, which is a program where I work four months with a mentor for free. I have been searching for a job every day for 3-4 hours, I feel very discouraged . I am also very nervous to start my career as a nurse, I lack confidence and bombed my first panel interview . Any advice, tips, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you :redbeathe

Well, I also graduated in December 2009 in NY and started applying to out of state hospitals. I interviewed in Arkansas and Kentucky last month and was offered a job at the end of the interview.
The other hospital even let me choose any specialty.
Look into southern states! The pay is less but the living cost is very low as well.

I agree with smileymimi!
I live in Houston, Texas, and you would have no problem finding a job here at all.
Plus, the hospitals (M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, The Methodist Hospital, Texas Medical Center, etc.) are easily among the best in the nation.
Sure, the pay might be lower than in CA, but when you can buy a very nice house for less than a $100K here, it more than balances out.
Plus, theres no state income tax here either!

Sami I am really interested in Texas! ANy help you could offer would be much appreciated!
For instance, check out some of these hospitals' listings right in my neighborhood:
North Cypress Medical Center
Methodist Hospital System

Employment - Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas
I know that there are definitely oodles of job openings for nurses here!

Thanks for the help. Methodist requires a BSN for their New Grad program, tried there already. I have an ADN and a BS in another field, they said no to that. They also require a 3.2 GPOA, I have a 3.13
North Cypress Medical has a website issue, when I click on "apply here" I get a page cannot be displayed. ALl of their positions say "prefer 6 months to 1 year exp" so they are not totally out, I will call tomorrow during business hours. There is hope!
TMC has no new grad positions, every position they have listed requires experience.
Baylor has one RN position listed, requires 2 years oncology experience. Can't find any Graduate Nurse positions or New Grad programs either.

Yeah, I'd imagine Methodist would be really competitive
NCMC is very much a new hospital, I think it was built around four years ago or so. Anyway, I live about five minutes from that place, and I've heard it generally has quite a few openings.
Also, take a look at this:
Search available HCA Houston Healthcare Jobs
I don't know how helpful it would be to you, but perhaps it could help :)
Thanks everybody! One of my classmates from California went to Texas for an application because his gpa was too low. He had a 3.33 gpa and they wanted 4.0 because other applicants had 4.0 GPA. I don't know what area Texas it was in, but I am pretty sure the city. The cities are pretty competitive right?

Austin, Texas is pretty competitive! There's just soo many applicants, it's crazy!
motivated new grads > positions available
it's unfortunate that there are so many new grads eager to learn and work, but there are limited jobs available
I don't know if this would be of any help to you, but Baylor posted a new RN position:

Maybe you could qualify for that? :)

I live in South Florida and I know some hospitals like to hire new grads in the summer time, I guess this is b/c it's not the 'seasonal' time of year, when it is busy. I know for a fact Northwest medical center has positions open now. I just saw it tonite. Also I hear that new grads should look for jobs that that say 'experience PREFERRED' -and not REQUIRED. That's usually a good indicator that that hospital or employer may be willing to hire a new grad.
I just passed the NCLEX:dncgbby: and Im looking myself. I'm waiting for Delray Medical Center to post their new grad positions that will ultimately begin in August. This hospital only hires brand new RNs that havent worked elsewhere for their 'new grad' program. This is what Im hearing. I hope it helps. Good Luck and Be Well.:tinkbll:
ps. The 2 hospitals I mentioned are both in Florida. It may be worth it to relocate it. Weigh the pros and cons...
