Due to recent changes regarding applications for International nurses to Australia and the combining of the nursing boards to one central nursing board in Australia AHPRA I have started a new thread for people to discuss the new process on working in Australia.
Currently New Zealand is not accepting new applicants from International trained nurses except those that meet the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement {TTMR} this will be updated once the New Zealand nursing board reopen their books to International nurses.

Hello! What does this course outline look like? Is it in the your transcript of records? Or is it another school document?
Hi there ianina :) its another school document. Wherein there is a brief description per subject, as well as its equivalent units and hours. Some schools will not release their course outline because it's their own private document. If they issue you a course description it's acceptable as long as the subject's number of units and equivalent hours are included.

In my TOR, there is only a description, but nothing like the brief description that you are talking about because it is just the complete the name of the course, I think. There is a number of units beside every course/subject, but there is no number of hours associated with each.
There is, however, a separate sheet in my TOR outlining the various competencies and clinical nursing skills with a designated number of hours for each competency/skill. I don't know if all the provided information I gave will suffice, but in the event that they are not at all satisfied, I won't be surprised if they ask me for the actual course outline like the one you forwarded :)
Thanks so much leey86, hopefully I can get through this. :)

Maybe that will do ianina.. :) God bless on your application
Hi! for those who passed their application in AHPRA- WA, i called up their office a while ago and an agent told me that they are now processing the papers they have received on the last week of Aug 2011. They received mine on Sept 16.. So for those who are still waiting for their eligibility letter, don't lose hope, they'll be giving ours soon... hopefully before the year ends :).
I'm planning to take my BP in CON, do you think, I should email them my documents without my ahpra letter? What do you think I should do now, while waiting for my letter? Any good schools out there that will offer BP on 2012? How can I contact them?
Your inputs will be highly appreciated. Thanks!
hi guys,
I sent my docs to AHPRA- WA last Oct. 28, along with my course description with number of hours already. Here are the 2 emails I got from them:
NOVEMBER 1, 2011 - Email from Ms. ******** stating:
I confirm that AHPRA has received your application for registration as a nurse on the 01 Nov 2011.
In order to assist AHPRA staff with the assessment process, can you please provide us with the following information if it is applicable to you:
- If your current Australian visa is expiring within the next two months, please provide your visa number, type and expiry date.
- If you have an offer of employment in Australia as a nurse / midwife commencing within the next two months, please provide a letter of offer from your employer stating the intended commencement date.
If this does not apply to you, please DO NOT RESPOND; your application will be processed in due course.
In order that your application can be assessed further, could you please forward a certified copy of the course outline or student handbook from the university or institution where your qualification was conferred. We do not require the whole course syllabus, simply an outline of the courses conducted, and the theoretical and clinical units undertaken within each course.
Please be aware that once your application has been assigned to a Registration Officer and the documentation has been checked in detail, you may be asked to provide further documentation/information.
Please ensure you include the name that appears on your passport and your date of birth on the document.
This mail box is not monitored, if this is applicable to you please respond to
NOVEMBER 4, 2011 - Auto generated email stating:

The application is currently being assessed and you will be notified if any further information is required.
Once your application has been assessed and processed you will be advised of the outcome.
Please do not respond to this auto-generated email.

1. Does this mean my documents are already with a case officer? It's not stated in the email who I should contact to follow up on the status of my application....
thanks, I hope somebody could enlighten me on this matter..thanks and Godbless.
Hi, in my case, I was given a new TOR by my school with additional columns indicating the number of theoretical hours (meaning lecture hours) and number of lab hours I took per sem and put the number of units and number of hours per subject beside.I submitted a course description as well. It is sort of like a breakdown of subject hours taken in college. My school provided me one, it's about 30 pages long and it details all the courses I took (nursing and non-nursing) from 1st year to 4th year. I've submitted this to AHPRA and they have accepted it.
Here's a sample so you can have an idea:
NUR 12 - Promotive & Preventive Care Management 1 (8 units)
The course is designed to provide students the developmental theories and concepts, to critically analyze health needs and concerns of the individual, family and community. Classroom and RLE provided students with activities to develop skills, knowledge and attitude and values on health promotion and identification and management of risk factors.
What I did was, I showed the letter from AHPRA to our school registrar and dean of nursing, paid the necessary courier fees and they were the ones who sent it to AHPRA.
@ZONROX
THAnk you for this. I was also asked to give a course outline and my brother was having trouble getting it from my school.
Thank you for this.
topic:o bp (tasks, duties, expectations during bp)
o job hunting after bp
o depression during bp
below is a post originally made by haoyin....
hello guys...
before anything else, i have a confession to make... i tried injecting a little bit of humor in this forum before to make it a bit lively in the person of "lithotomy." some people took offense of it though which i and some other people felt was totally funny.
anyway, i'm posting again to share some information about the things that transpired during my bridging program here in la trobe, bendigo. first off, our class includes 10 filipinos, 10 indians, 2 chinese, 1 malaysian, 1 kenyan, 1 japanese, and 1 aussie (returning to practice). i finished the course in 10 weeks, which was chronologically comprised of 2 weeks theory class in the uni, 1 week non-acute clinical placement in aged care, 2 weeks theory class in the uni, and 5 weeks acute clinical placement. in the uni, you will have 2 return demonstration exams and 1 written exam, which i found to be fairly easy. no need to panic as everything will be taught prior to the exams.
clinical practice wise, it would definitely be advantageous for you if you have experience working in the hospital setting. then again, if you don't have experience, as long as you pick up things quick and you do ask questions rather than pretend to know what you're doing, then you'll be fine. just an overview of what to expect...
1. plenty of attending to activities of daily living i.e., showering, cleaning of faeces, feeding, etc
2. vital signs monitoring
3. administration of medications (oral, subcut, im, iv infusions, iv push)
4. clinical procedures (iv bung removal, idc insertion/removal, epidural catheter removal, ecg, bladder scans, venipuncture, setting up i.v. lines/infusion pumps, wound dressings, etc.)
5. documentations (transfer, discharge, admission, progress notes, clinical nursing pathways, etc.)
6. hand overs to next shift of nurses (via recorder/dictaphone or live)
7. use of lifting machines as it's not allowed to manually lift patients here
what i can say is that... even without experience, you will still be fine to get through the course especially if you're enthusiastic and keen to learn. that said however, it might prove to be hard for job to come by if you don't have at least 2 years experience in an acute facility. take note that there are also plenty of local nurse graduates who did graduate nurse programs that does not require sponsorship for working visa applying for jobs. so definitely, your experience is a plus-plus factor.
right now, i'm waiting for my registration with ahpra and i have the vaguest idea how long it will take. i am starting to apply for jobs online, which is a bit difficult. most institutions would require that i already have my registration while some require a more specific qualification/experience. and there are some that require experience carried out in a country with similar nursing regulations to australia, like usa, canada, uk, ireland and new zealand and some simply don't do sponsorships. i am not saying this to instill fear in anyone who would be coming here but i am just laying down facts. nonetheless, i am pretty sure that you can still find a job as long as you try hard enough.
the thing to consider is time. when will you be coming over to finish your bridging course? i'm sure everyone knows that nursing isn't as lucrative as a profession nowadays as compared to before. we all have to contend with various things aside from the amount of expenses we have to shell out. so we are really running against time.
anyway, if i am not mistaken, there will be around 18 or maybe more filipinos coming over for the next january intake of la trobe. i can vouch for la trobe university for those of you who have yet to decide where they will do their bridging course.
this may just be a personal thing, but the thing i found to be most difficult here is the emotional distress of being far away from home, far from your family and friends... physical and mental exhaustion from the clinical placements is nothing after a night's rest, but the depression is just really something so overwhelmingly difficult for me to overcome.
well, that's just about it. see you guys soon and wish me luck. hopefully i will be able to get over this state of uncertainty. soon.
hi! i am just wondering, what was the visa of the writer when he went to australia? la trobe offers a 12 week bp and a business class visa holder can stay in au for 3 mos maximum. with that in mind, i am considering con in burwood since the bp program is 2 mos only but my relatives are in melbourne, which is near la trobe but then i am still undecided to go to la trobe because the bp is longer as compared to con. i hope somebody can help me with this one. thanks!
ianina
