Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
To JavRN, cioman94, and others who may have a say on this -My sister, who holds an RN license in the US, has been working for over a year as a staff nurse in Florida but contemplates on relocating to Australia. I understand that she would still need to comply with the English competency requirements among others. Particularly, a 7 in all bands and an overall score of at least 7 in IELTS.
Question: Under the new rules in AHPRA - NMBA, is she still going to be required to undertake a bridging program like the Initial Registration Course for Overseas Nurses (IRCON) in Victoria should she decide to seek registration in Australia as a nurse under the new rules in AHPRA? Or is she going to be entitled into any form of exemption so she can proceed directly with the Australian registration after submitting complete documentation? I'm in the process of gathering information about this and, at the same time, seeking whatever knowledge anyone may have about this matter.
All your inputs are very much welcomed and shall be appreciated.

Keep kewl, guys! Thanks!
generally they would assess applications on a case to case basis, but, as a matter of practice you would see the trend of who's who and what applications will be approved, except for some peculiar situations like what you have just raised. if there is still no precedence, then we really do not know what will be their response (unlike the previous nursing boards which we are all familiar with). hence, ahpra may assess her application as by itself and may or may not grant automatically an Oz license. as you know, ahpra is still in transition period and not all cases/applications have specific written rules on it, only those common type of cases like ours.
my personal opinion though is that they will put big weight on where she got her BSN degree which is in our country, and historically even in prior nursing boards they do not give favorable view on phil. BSN degree, meaning, must undergo BP.. the only lenient and flexible nursing boards back then was NT where i got my license..
just my opinion..
ielts, tsk tsk, i have not read their latest rules except for that rule to have 7 in all bands.. i dont know if they have a list of exceptions, like before, when you have had worked for 6 mos. in an english speaking country then you will be exempted.. just dont know now.. but as i see it, as they are very busy, they may just immediately say, all must be 7 irregardless..
good luck..
Hello there guys. I am (hopefully) on my last week of my IRCON here in Victoria. I would just like to relay some possibly important but still unverified information.Don't accept this as fact since this is just second hand information but we have heard that it will take 3 months instead of the regular 1-2 weeks to receive registration after the IRCON as told by the NMBA to a student from the last batch. Now if this is true, this is quite disappointing. The student now has to go home before her visa expires as 3 months is too long a wait. I am not sure if she finished the course right after or just before July 1. Again I have to verify this information. Something might have been lost in translation but I really hope this isn't true. I will relay the information here within this week as soon as I get the official word.
hello, may i give my straight forward opinion/comment if i may (no intention for depressing others:
- existing Aus. RNs like me still do not have the hard copy of the new AHPRA nursing license. so, if we existing RNs do not have that copy, then how much more with the new batch. they still have to print thousands nationwide of that new copy of licenses..
- however, it is also possible that the new batch will receive their copy first before the existing RNs, because it is manageable to do so since there are only a few of you. but, others (not me) may complain how come the new nurses got theirs while the old nurses did not have it yet..
- nonetheless, it is highly probable that while you will not "receive" your licenses soon, but you may be "included" in the "register of nurses" as soon as it normally does. meaning, perhaps after one week when you check the online register in AHPRA you will now find your name as RN but you do not yet have the hard copy.. Now the question is will the DIAC or employer consider applications without hard copy of your license? that i do not know..
just the same, best of luck to all us.. pray for wisdom guys on what to do in these circumstances..
thank you for the information..
hi! this is my first time to post although I have been following this thread for quite a long time now. thank you everyone for helping me in a lot of ways. i sent my application to nbv last june and since they are not done with assessing my papers (have not submitted my ielts but will do so this week), i believe they are now with the new registration body, my question is do i have to submit the new requirements like CV (i believe they did not require that before) and should i pay the new fees (i paid only 145 AUD, now they are asking for both application and registration fees)?Oh, and is there anyone here who has a pending application like me? thanks everyone for taking time out to read and answer. good day :)
- as a matter of policy, applicants with the same case like you who filed their application and still pending and now under the ahpra, must comply with the requirements under the new rules which unfortunately include that CV you mentioned.
- i do not know the fees, that's a question which was only raised now.. hope others could answer it..
- ideally you must contact ahpra victoria to know your status, like bekimon who emailed and asked question about his(her?? sorry dont knw) aplications.. and expect reply to your email 2-3 weeks later as per bekimon's experience.
good luck.. keep monitoring your aplications, and keep in touch with other forumers who have similar case like yours so that you could help one another like brothers and sisters, char..
peace..
Thank you cioman for your insight & nice breakdown of the situation. Oh well, I guess there's nothing to do & hope for the best. I'll keep you guys posted.

Most nurses here in Australia at the moment, really do not care if they have their card with the new number or not as we all have letters with our new numbers and employers that I have had dealings with...look the registration up on the Registry of Practitioners.
The NBV was very quick on giving out nursing registrations and therefore everyone was quite spoilt. It is now a combined board that is now requesting far more checks and documentation, I think they also must receive a criminal check directly from ones own country and IELTs so it may take far more time to assess all the documents they require now, including the currency of practise before they agree to register, or suggest further education. I do realise the nurses are here now and have already gone through some of the checks with the NBV but to register with this board may need more documentation, like these police checks and cv's etc.
As Cioman said the are using the first applications to set a standard of what will be acceptable......anyway dosen't your nurses board take months ++++ also? as they say fair go!
thank you guys for all the valuable information here. you know who you are. i am bound for australia this september with multiple entry. yay! see you guys around.
