New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Guys, I received an email today from AHPRA regarding my enquiry about using my eligibility to take the BP from Victoria be endorsed to NSW

and it says: If you have an eligibility letter (that remains valid) from one of the previous state registration boards you can apply to any of the assessment of competence (or bridging) programs approved by the NMBA

does this mean Im good to take the BP in NSW?

Specializes in Oncology, Medical.

I think it clearly says that any state under NMBA. They have a list on their website for bridging programs.

Specializes in Med-Surg / ICU / Aged Care.

yeah, i agree with starfish, i believe you can use your victoria's court eligibility to take BP in any state..:yeah:

@ bling.... thank you for the first-hand information you shared, we needed such ground data straight from the battleground, for us to have some reality check and consequently have so-called, guarded optimism..:uhoh3:

@bekimon: wow thanks for that info.. i better go check the website and see what offers bp in NSW:)

hi everyone.. i am starting to apply for Australia, i got some questions to ask,, hope you guys could help me.. thanks in advance.. i would like to ask if do you know what link at the AHPRA could tell me how or what documents i need to submit? if you could tell me what documents are to be submitted original or only certified copies and who can certify the documents? any lawyer will do? thanks you all again guyz...

google AHPRA website, then try to check all of the icons, one of them would be "how can i register as a health practitioner". click, then many more options/icons like registration process, common registration forms..

sorry but my personal advice is: give time and patience in reading researching the said website, it is there, just keep on clicking each icons, and you will find many things that you need.. after doing that, then shoot your questions here..

nonetheless, with regards to docus/lawyers:

only certified copies as certified by any lawyer/notary public.. certification should sound like this:

"Certified true copy of the original document that i have seen as presented and shown to me.." sign lawyer,.. remember that each page must be signed by the lawyer.. each page....

good luck and just shoot your questions here after you read the ahpra website... we would be glad to help you as you would.. peace..

I got confused because that was not what they said when I talked to them by phone. it took them 2.5 weeks to reply to my mail

wehhh?? truly bells cioman??heheheh aww i shouldve waited for their mail, there goes my $40 for the additional docs they need

Re GNP, it was offered by the hospitals during the Nursing Expo so I guess they accept overseas nurses.

Yes, GNP can also be offered to overseas nurses, provided that they also hold a PR status. The only visa appropriate for the GNP is a graduate visa, which I think is very hard to have if you did not have minimum of two-year study in Australia. A tourist visa is not accepted as it will not allow you to work.

To JavRN, cioman94, and others who may have a say on this -

My sister, who holds an RN license in the US, has been working for over a year as a staff nurse in Florida but contemplates on relocating to Australia. I understand that she would still need to comply with the English competency requirements among others. Particularly, a 7 in all bands and an overall score of at least 7 in IELTS.

Question: Under the new rules in AHPRA - NMBA, is she still going to be required to undertake a bridging program like the Initial Registration Course for Overseas Nurses (IRCON) in Victoria should she decide to seek registration in Australia as a nurse under the new rules in AHPRA? Or is she going to be entitled into any form of exemption so she can proceed directly with the Australian registration after submitting complete documentation? I'm in the process of gathering information about this and, at the same time, seeking whatever knowledge anyone may have about this matter.

All your inputs are very much welcomed and shall be appreciated.

Keep kewl, guys! Thanks!

Hi reiken830. If your sister finished with an ADN then she would still have to take the conversion as the ADN is not recognized in Australia. If she finished with a BSN she would have to take the bp.

That's how I understand it. Anyone here can correct me if I got it wrong:)

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

ADN is recognised in Australia (well it used to be and we had a couple of US nurses post they was accepted with ADN)

hi! this is my first time to post although I have been following this thread for quite a long time now. thank you everyone for helping me in a lot of ways. i sent my application to nbv last june and since they are not done with assessing my papers (have not submitted my ielts but will do so this week), i believe they are now with the new registration body, my question is do i have to submit the new requirements like CV (i believe they did not require that before) and should i pay the new fees (i paid only 145 AUD, now they are asking for both application and registration fees)?

Oh, and is there anyone here who has a pending application like me? thanks everyone for taking time out to read and answer. good day :)
