New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

@anyad. Hi there! i finally got the letter from nbv too.. the multiolored one.. good to go except for the ielts exam.. mine will expire on jan so they want me to take it first..

@mynalla

Congrats hehe but i was wondering if you have IELTS already and its still valid till January. Why do you have to take it again?

@countmein. thanks! at first i thought they returned my application form again to amend some details because the mailing envelope was quite heavy. when i saw the multicolored papers inside, i screamed like a freaking psycho haha (while i was at the gate and in front of the mail man.. double haha:)).

anyway, my ielts results will expire on jan 31, 2011 already. they want me to take it first and send them a copy of the results. i guess even if i get included in the oct etea intake, i still need a valid ielts exam results for registration and employment purposes.

to study you need a 6.5. but to immigrate, you still need a 7.

You're right. Student visa requires an IELTS of 6.5. The overall band score of 7 is for the acquisition of license. However, I think 6.5 is okay for permanent residency. I'm not sure about this yet but i stand to be corrected if i'm wrong. :)

Hello guys. My doctor says I need to be vaccinated with MMR and TDaP whether or not I am vaccinated when I was a neonate. There is an adult vaccine for these (as a booster dose). For the varicella, she just gave me a certificate since I had a chicken pox before. Luckily, I am reactive to HepB antibody so she issued me another certificate for this. If you're not reactive yet, there is no need to worry because there is a HepB vaccine for travellers. You can finish the 3 doses within 21 days, and the booster dose after 1 year. She was consulted by many nurses already and she is an infectious diplomate. So I think she's a reliable doctor. She even said that it's ok to have all these vaccines at once (pretty scary but nothing happened to me anyway). whew!

@ cioman :just redo all the immunization on the checklist then get the doctor to certify the vaccines given to you...don't worry too much about format or whatever.... you can get the swine flu vaccine here it's covered in your OSHC (overseas student health care)

hi guys.=) i have been reading this forum for a month now, but i'm still confused, which is better conversion program or BP? =) and i've read this in UNi. of Ballarat's website, re:BN(P) for nurses, "Enables pursuit of post graduate study. May enable a "pathway" to registration with the NBV, if certain criteria are met." --> does this mean after studying for a year, my registration as a nurse in Vic, is not yet sure?:(

im waiting for the changes this coming july, but im considering conversion too. im just confused. thanks

@ NewMac, mooh_mooh, cioman94: Having sought various clinics for immunisation and serology tests inquiry within my area (Metro Manila), I found out that obtaining a serology blood exam just to determine the presence of antibodies against microorganisms for each of the enumerated diseases in our immunisation list would indeed cost MORE as opposed to having shots of the vaccines themselves.

The clinics charge separate fees for each serology test that you wish to take which makes it too steep for a price. To be specific, I inquired at Hi-Precision Diagnostic Clinic which is known to provide such services at cost-effective prices but when I asked about how much would they charge for a serology test for Tetorifice, their price is at Php2,800 alone while a separate serology exam for Diphtheria is at Php1,420. If you'd combine the two, it would already cost you a total of Php4,220 just to sort out if you have antibodies for both diseases. Not to mention, you have to wait for 2-3 weeks for the results. While taking the vaccines themselves which is the DTap (that covers immunity for Diphtheria, Tetorifice, plus Pertussis), you'd only need to shell out Php1,200 for each dose, in the course of 3 shots intervals, amounting to only Php3,600 total. Btw, this is based on Jacob's Ladder's Immunization Center's price list, which is, by far, the immunisation clinic that offers the most affordable vaccines on the market in Metro Manila. They charge Php700 for each Hep B vaccination while each Hep A shot costs Php2,300. You need 3 shots for Hep B while only 2 injections are required for Hep A.

Now, since I'll be starting from scratch and is bound to comply with what's written on the checklist, you can very well imagine how much "BLOODIER" (as how mooh_mooh described it) would it be if I get serology tests for all diseases on the list which would not even guarantee me immunity. Thus, I decided to skip with it to cut the costs and planned to go straight to acquiring the vaccines themselves instead. Besides, I had it confirmed with the the physicians in the immunisation clinics that there will be no adverse reactions should one redo his inoculations... only an undesirable "side-effect" on one's pockets. :D

I need not indicate the rest of the prices that I've gathered for all serology tests but they are QUITE discouraging indeed.... Though this is based on my firsthand experience in scrutinising how to go about my immunisation... corrections and additional inputs are most welcomed.

@REIKEN:

Dude, you really are good! Thanks for the info! I learn so much from you! :bow:

If my IELTs will expire and I get into a bridging program and it finishes right after my IELTS expires. Should I worry or not since before commencing the BP, NBV already has records of my IELTS. Do i need to resubmit new ones when the time comes to officially register?
