New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

yes, that's my greatest fear right now, that's why im praying hours everyday for luck.. at worst, i may find job in the super remote area as mentioned.. tsk tsk.. crossing my fingers.. but then again, on the bright side, it's better than the desert of the middle east plus better pay.. anyway.. sigh..

fear is useless, what you need is trust. you are already a registered nurse in australia. plus you have hospital experience. outline the specific skills you have in your resume and match it with the selection criteria for the job. believe me, it would not matter what school you came from, what bp program you went through. employers wont ask you where you did you bp. not all foreign grads are required to undergo a bp. they are only interested about your valid license, and that your experience would match their requirements. you don't even have to send the tor of your nursing education. references from your previous employer really matter, so do what you can so that they will sell you. they will call the references.

send your resume to 1000 employers, and you will get 1 sponsorship offer. and that is all you need! only 1 employer. you dont have to include the remotest rural area. i sent only around 120 applications, and recently i got three more offers, one from a big private hospital in the city, and two from aged care also in big cities.

if you want to go to aged care, state in your resume that you are currently studying aged care legislation and acfi principles and guidelines as you have no experience yet in aged care. and man, believe me a lot will call you for interview. if you can answer intelligently the questions regarding those guidelines, they will hire you because it shows that you are proactive and that you have the passion for self directed learning.

always do the best you can today, and success will be just around the corner. remember the time when you were mocked in this thread because you have no experience and you wanted to go to nz and or oz? a fellow pinoy called you ambisyoso! you took the right steps, and now you have more than a year of hospital experience. it is about time you go to oz. give me a call when you get here and i will buy you lots of beer! cheers!

I salute you for your persistence. Congratulations. you deserve it.

I think the 120 applications is nothing compared to the thousand plus sent by some of my colleagues. It's not really hard. I prepared 4 sets of resumes, each aligned for mental health, medical, surgical, and aged care. The applications were all sent online so it is just a matter of cut and paste depending on the requirements needed by the employer.

I hope this will encourage our fellow forumers who are weary and wary regarding future employment here in Oz. Finding a job nowadays is not as easy as it was 2 to 3 years ago. Hospitals then were shouting for nurses newbies and oldies alike. Now most would only hire highy experienced nurses. But even if you have no nursing experience, you will still land a job if you don't stop looking.

The most important thing is getting that registration.

I am also asking you guys to pray for me for my intentions. Thanks

thanks javrn and to other members who continuously helped, i may not be able to repay you but i have been paying it forward by helping others..

you are welcome cio. this is one of the ways i can pay forward. i lurked this thread since 2008 and it has been very useful for me. i did not have the courage to post anything then but the information given by the members were just so helpful. there is a wealth of information and misinformation too.

i feel connected the people in this thread because of the shared aspirations.i rejoiced silently the success of some, i was saddened by the temporary setbacks experienced by others. had a good laugh when lithotomy and company came in later, now i rejoice their step further in this journey. i continue to pray for the others who are still on the earlier stages.

@ chokokat79, if you sent application to nbv, i hope you will receive the approval letter this month.

Interviews are normally done face to face if you and the employer are in the same city. For interstate and international, it will be a phone interview. Face to face is only a must in mental health.

Your professional references, just write their names, position, email, and contact numbers in your resume. you may also write a sentence or two re their capacity to give info re your competence and work ethic.

References in writing in a letterhead of the hospital will be useful, but not necessary.

You can apply as immigrant and go to aus as pr since you already have an aus license. And when it comes to hiring you're under priority one. And you'll have the option of working part time or the higher paying casual. If you have the resources this is your best option. But if moolah is limited then you'll need to patiently search for an employer.

Is there already news about the national registration this July?
