New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

hello aelith!

Thank you very much for your reply.

i, however, am still thinking if i should pursue my application to australia or nz or just take the nclex...

each of my options are quite expensive and time consuming. i am not sure yet if i could take the risk of applying.

i am soooo confused....

I'd like to help you understand more of the pros and cons for some of your options. Then maybe, it can help you decide.

About NCLEX, I wouldn't really recommend doing that if you don't have any visa that would let you work there. Retrogression is still in place and expect a long time for it to be lifted. People like agencies and such may take advantage of you and promise things but they are just telling you a part/glimpse of the real deal. You may want to double check any contract you will be signing - you may be liable for any fees should you break the contract.

New Zealand is okay too, however, you said you are a shifter. It is true that NZNC do prefer the basic 4-year grads compared to the shifters/second coursers. That then might be a big hindrance for you but I'm also not saying that you will surely be denied. Some second courses have really gone thru the same length of study and all the required nursing subjects and hours of practice and some of them got accepted. It would really depend on your case.

In Australia, inexperienced nurses can still apply for certain states for registration which I think is good. However, like NZ, you would still have to go thru a bridging program or a series of exams in Queensland.

Anything that has to do with going abroad or out of the country, would need a large sum of money to be able to accomplish that. Also, expect that it will really be time consuming as immigration process alone takes a whole lot of time. I know it's a bit too hard to wait for too long especially when you need/want to achieve something now, but we can't really do anything about it.

Spending your time pondering on what to do is already consuming much of your time too. ;) But I'm not saying you have to rush and decide now, I said that just so you could see that everything takes time.

Also, you will never know what will truly happen in the end unless you risk a little and try. But having adequate knowledge of the options you have can help build up some courage. And in order to have that knowledge, you will need to research as much as you can so you'll be aware of the pros and cons of the options you have at the moment. From there, choose whichever option you think you will be most comfortable with you and what you think will benefit you more in the long run not just now. It is never easy, but perseverance coupled with a lot of patience, will help you accomplish your goal a lot faster than you think. Don't be disheartened by the many cons of each option nor let yourself be limited by your fears. Keep your hopes up. You are not the only one who's going thru that. ;)

Hope that helps. :)

This thread is indeed very useful. and Miss aelith has all the significant say and generous contributions that can motivate a lot of us. . . Thank you..:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow:

Thank you Ma’am Aelith for the valuable information you posted in this thread! Good luck and God bless to you! :saint:

I sent my application to QNC last September 18, 2008. I received today the acknowledgment letter of my application and the corresponding fees. To those who are about to lodge their application in Queensland, please take note that QNC increased their application and assessment fees since July 1, 2008 (from $47 AUD & $104 AUD to $49 AUD & $109 AUD).

Good luck to us all! :wink2:

Ooppssss sorry for that, my apology. Yes, I will post any updates I will have from QNC.

thank you aelith!

you have really been of great help to me. i like you!!! and you talk like my big sister... you say the same things...

nclex rwally is my last option. although my family is in the states, i have no intentions of staying there for a long time.

i am seriously considering applying for registration in queensland. i already have the application forms. and i think i have enough courage to go with the challenge test.

i would like to know, however, if you have any idea on how i could contact the agency that i've read about in the thread - the one that offers the part a of the challenge test here in the philippines.... i stayed up all night last night searching the web but i didn't find anything except for little details mentioned in other blogs.

i hope you could help me (for the nth time) on this one...

Hehe :) Well, if your family's there then that's good. You can take the nclex path ;)

I'll message you about the other one. Btw, don't mind how many times you ask me. I've been talking to people for months and I don't really mind . Just feel free to ask me anytime. ;)

to those who want to apply for Queensland and would like to know more about the programs I could email you the information booklet and flier that they sent me regarding the competence assessment programs.

but i decided to go for NSW since i already started my application last July. it would be a waste of time to reapply and wait again. huhu do you think i am making a right choice? i mean the cost of living is expensive but could i apply for reciprocity to another state after being registered?

Yes it is a bit different in a way. However, the general knowledge for nursing is the same just that it is applied in their own settings.

Yes, I know quite a few who were accepted. You can also find them here lurking around somewhere. ;)

Wow! You really know so much! Thank you! Thank you! Aelith you are heaven sent :yeah:

Hi again! anyone here who has been accepted into the CAS Program without prior experience?

-What should an inexperienced nurse answer in item 5 (Most recent practise box) of the application form?

-What about item 6 (Competence declaration)? It states that one must have

a) been employed within the last 5 years OR

b) been required within the last 5 years to use nursing skills... OR

c) completed an accredited or approved pre-registration...program

Should I tick the box that states that I am unable to declare that I am competent to practise?? Im really confused please help me

Yes, you can apply for reciprocity. There's no wrong or right choice so try not to stress yourself too much. It seems everyone gets scared when they find out that in NSW the cost of living is higher. As what I always tell people, the cost of living may be higher but the pay rate is much higher too. Don't be too scared as rents are pretty much the same rate in cities. You can check online the prices for rents in Brisbane and compare to those in Sydney. It is not so different. You can also get lower priced apartments/units in Sydney, you just have to stay in the areas outside Sydney CBD. Also, the majority of jobs are in the more expensive cities most especially Sydney. An example would be like if there are 100 jobs in Sydney, half or less than half of that would be the number of jobs available in the other cities.
