New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

yeah i just found out that you can complete the modules for 12 weeks overseas! that's so convenient!!!! does the agency also offer information about the modules not just the challenge test???? pm me too. thanks

By 12 weeks you mean per module not the whole 4 modules I suppose? Cause I'm not too sure how you can finish all 4 modules in just 3 months... basically it's 12 wks/module.

Your input will be much appreciated so that the others can pretty much know how the education modules will be if that is really the case. ;)

This is happening in 2010 but we need to concentrate on what is required now

That is true. Actually, the July 2010 one is not even sure yet. It might still be pushed to 2011. But, like what all Universities and state regulating authorities have told me, you need not to worry about it if you are applying before that cause the state regulating authorities are still functioning. Also, they can't really tell what will happen later on when it is implemented. So, for now, we only have to stick with what's available for us and follow that. ;)

hi. im here in the Philippines and currently a volunteer in one of the Hospitals here. ive never been to Australia. at the time of my application, i just left the sorta history of employment part blank...but i sent copies of my license and practically every document that could certify that i was a very "competent" student in my Univ...if you have certificates or awards related to Nursing that could probably help too but it's not really required. no need to send a CV. ;)

thanks...for which state is this? and when did u apply?

Hello Aelith. Iv read the entire thread and noticed that you know so much about registering in Australia. I was wondering if you could help me. I am very interested in the CAS program, the taking the challenge test part. Since the test is about Austrlian issues, is there a good review center in Manila that you could suggest? Any place where I could get review materials? If its an agency, what agency? Just so I would have an idea on what kind of questions they would be asking. I would also like to clarify if experience is required to be eligible for the CAS program. I just took my boards last June 2008 so I do not have any work experience at all. If its not required, what about that #5 question in their application? What should I answer? I noticed that we arent supposed to post agencies or companies here so uhm would you pm or mail me for that? Super thanks=)

okay, wait.. they said im not allowed to rcv private messages here :( uhm is it possible for you to mail me? i would reeeaaaallyy reeeeeeeeeeeaaaallly appreciate it :)

i have been reading about filipino nurses in australia when i chanced upon this forum. and i've noticed that you know a LOT about the process and you've been VERY helpful to everyone. i am hoping that you and allnurses.com could help me i am soooo confused on what to do.

you see, i wanted to go to nz at first. i was obssessed with nz! but then i heard about them preferring those with pure bsn degree (i shifted from another course). i asked the council about this

my 2nd choice is australia. i already have the forms for application. i've been studying them everyday. on what to do. i wanted to apply for registration once license (next month). my sister suggested that i apply for skilled migration which one do you think should i do first?

and about that training school here in the phils, i am VERY interested. could you PLEASE tell me more about it?

The agencies have their own review program. At the moment, you can apply with or without experience. As for the answer in #5, they said you have to declare that you don't have experience. I'm not too sure but if it's a declaration, it can be like in a form of a statement or letter with an explanation maybe. You can double check to be sure.

Thank you so much. I guess it is totally different from nclex since there wouldnt be review materials or review centers available. Have you heard of nurses without experience who were accepted into the CAS Program?

If you are going for Skilled Migration, you need to have a certain number of years experience for a start. Your Bachelor of Nursing degree should also be comparable to an Australian degree and if not, would possibly have to go through a bridging program or competency assessment program. There competency based assessment program can also be waived if you are included in the countries listed in their site which does not include Philippines.

Also, you would still need to be registered in Australia to be able to practice there.

By the way, immigration and registration are two very different things.

So, basically, it would still be wiser to complete the registration first so that when you finally go there, you will be able to work as a nurse right away. In addition to that, you will have a fall back if ever you'll a have a negative assessment from ANMC - you can always go for a 457 visa instead. Just my :twocents:.

Yes it is a bit different in a way. However, the general knowledge for nursing is the same just that it is applied in their own settings.

Yes, I know quite a few who were accepted. You can also find them here lurking around somewhere. ;)

hello aelith!

Thank you very much for your reply.

i, however, am still thinking if i should pursue my application to australia or nz or just take the nclex...

each of my options are quite expensive and time consuming. i am not sure yet if i could take the risk of applying.

i am soooo confused....
