New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

What do you mean by foreign registration?

When you graduate from a 2 year course, you would not really need a sponsor. Because you can apply directly for a Skilled-Independent visa - no need for employer to nominate you, you apply independently. However, a job waiting for you can add some more points and would then be helpful in your application but not essential.

oh ok...and the 1 year program graduates would need a sponsor? do u know any good universities in australia that offer the 2 yr program for foreign BSN grads?

To be able to get thru any program in Australia, you are going to need to have some type of license from another country at the very least.

Yes, the 1 year program will not make you eligible for the permanent visa nor the graduate visa so you will have to find an employer for you to apply for a 457 visa.

Also, licence is not a requirement for the pre-registration undergraduate or Masters degrees. The main requirement specifically for graduate entry programs is a valid Bachelors degree from Australia or Abroad. A lot of Universities do offer the graduate entry (2 year program) which includes but not limited to: University of Sydney, University of Western Sydney, University of Technology, Sydney, Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University, Curtin University of Technology, Flinders University.

The licence is usually required for the 1 year program or any length of program specifically designed for Overseas registered nurses. In addition to this, some Universities do require some experience.

Has anyone taken the Part A Challenge Test yet?

What are the chances that you could pass the test without having to enroll in the modules?

Thanks! :)

hello everyone!

just a reminder to newbies: please check the experience requirement of the nursing council AND the schools/hospitals which will conduct the bridging program (they sometimes differ, meaning, the nursing council accepts you but the school won't). also, check the tuitiion fees prior applying (for your own good), and check the reservation time and increase in tuition.

for that CAS Challenge Test:

Thank you minja for the information. Imagine, how many books you're going to study, but the questions will total to only 70.. you need 42 correct answers to ge 80% (assuming it's base 50 computation).

krish: i bet those who will go to Brisbane thru an agency will not share to us the study materials, that's why we will only get the topics.. they will just keep quiet which we should understand because they paid so much at the agency, so why should they give us such materials for free.. that's understandble, reality of the situation. thus, we just pray you would meet someone who is willing to sell his materials, that's the only solution... reality, fair is fair, dats the filipino way.. too bad.. good luck to us...

You can probably ask QNC regarding review materials. Maybe they can advise you where you can get those or what books to read. CQU might also be of help for that.

As for the Agency, I'm not really sure if they'll really be giving them materials to read at home or they can most probably just conduct review classes and lend them materials there but cannot be taken home. Not sure though, just a thought. Hehe :)

thank you for taking the time to reply to my question :) but the thing is I'm not looking for freebies. It would be unfair of me to do that. All I wanted was to know if, like the NCLEX and NLE, we could do self review with our own materials or if it would be better to enroll in the modules.

yep, sorry for that :).. i got your concern.. definitely, we can self review as long as we have the right books/materials, which brings me to another point (mentioned in the previous page) of that review center in manila charging AUD$7,000 !!! that's over to the max!! if somebody could afford to pay that amount for review, might as well use that amount for CAP tuition fees..:)

it is still worth the try to take the test instead of immediately deciding to enrol in all the 4 modules (P40,000 per module times 4 modules = P160,000 total cost).. why? because it is highly possible that you may be able to pass 2 or at least 1 module, which means you will only spend either 2 or 3 modules, thus, lesser than P160,000.. that's just how i see it, cost-benefit analysis..:specs:

by the way, the CAS CQU website states that they could not give study materials because the Challenge Test is a "self-directed" ek ek whatever.. so that's why im ruling out the possiblity of inquiring from them..

My bad. The information I posted earlier was for Queensland. I don't know for the other states. Sorry. :zzzzz

what's the 7000 AUD$ whole program? just the review or does it include the other expenditures (assessment fees, housing, plane, etc.).. if it's only the review itself, well that's usuriously expensive..
