New to Emergency Nursing

Published

Hi. I recently started orientation in the ED at the hospital I've been working at in med/surg for 18 months. Originally I hadn't thought of going into Emergency Nursing but one of my supervisors started encouraging me to look into it, so I did, and so far I really like things. It's a smaller hospital (134 beds) in a small city (around 70,000 people) but you definitely see a wide range of stuff coming in.

Before starting orientation I floated to the ED a good amount, took patients, started IVs, etc so I feel like I have a bit of a heads up. Doesn't keep my from feeling stupid a lot of the time, though lol.

Anyway, I just wanted to poke in here and say Hi. Thanks for all of the good info here. :)

Feeling stupid? Join the club. It gets much better as you gain experience.

And remember, the only bad question is the one that isn't asked.

Have fun.

Hi, I was just offered a position in the ED at a medium sized hospital. The ED is not large and I do have some experience as I was a Nurse Extern at a larger ED. I am currently working on an oncology/BMT unit for the past 18 months. I have learned a lot but I have always wanted to get back into the ED. Why am I scared of the change? Is it because I am comfortable and familiar with the setting I am in now. Is it normal to be afraid of change? I have wanted this for so long and now I'm scared. Any advice or comments appreciated. Thanks!
