Depending on the orientation and preceptorship offered, definitely don't turn it down for lack of experience. Just be sure you'll be adequately supported and not thrown in the deep end.

I love Cardiothoracic surgical nursing by Betsy Finkelmeier, but I think it's hard to get a hold of these days.

I think you should deff do it !

Hello from a long time CVSICU nurse. Take it if you are offered it . I would love to see a staff member come in that wants to do this for a career. 80% of the new staff we hire are just trying to get CVSICU on thier resume' so they can quit in a year and go for thier CRNA. (CVSICU background is a shu in). Experience in other ICU areas dosen't carry over to CVSICU as much as it does between the other units. I have a harder time orienting a RN with 10yrs ICU experience than I do orienting a nurse with 6mos on the floors and a willingness to learn. Welcome aboard!

I just started working in the CVCU. I absolutely love it! I worked in the ICU previously but this is where I want to be. I am fortunate enough to be working with some very knowledgeable and dedicated nurses who are also very supportive. I love that I am able to see the progress that patients make postop and I love the many opportunities to teach patients and their families. The cardiovascular system was my favorite to study in school. I always found it very fascinating.

i am starting a new position on an scvicu unit and i am very encouraged by the above posts.

i have just 9 months of nursing under my belt. i currently work on a total joint replacement floor and am so excited about the challenge ahead in my new position.

to the original poster good luck on your interview. i would take the position for sure. you will be gaining so much experience. as the others have said make sure the orientation time is to your liking/
