new CCU nurse

Published

I have been a nurse for over a decade and recently transferred to the CCU. The hospital has a 3 month orientation which is great because if I have any questions, my preceptor is right there. I will be off orientaion at the end of September so I'm starting to get a little nervous. I don't feel like I have a great understanding of ventilators and the settings, terms, etc. The course offered at the hospital was like 30 minutes long and was less than helpful. Any recommendations on where I can find some decent material on the care of the patient on ventilator support would be most appreciated.

Yes, your friendly respiratory therapist is a great place to start. Don't pass up this person. They are a great resource. Good luck, you'll do fine.

Hate to sound like a commercial but really the Ed4nurses.com website offers courses in critcial care essentials and critical care mastery which are done in layman's terms and are easy to understand. Helped me out a lot.

Specializes in ER/ ICU.

I agree. Ask to spend the day W/ RT. They are a great resource and will let you do " hands on".

Specializes in Critical Care, Cardiothoracics, VADs.

Any critical care book should have this info in easy to understand terms also. Maybe you can ask one of your RTs to do an inservice?

Specializes in none.

it may sound funny but I had the same problem and went out to by critical care nursing made increadibly easy... it made the jargon digestible and I researched what I learned from there.

good luck
