HELP! Need Las Vegas Nursing Info

U.S.A. Nevada

Please help Vegas nurses! I am relocating to Vegas in 2 months (end of Feb, '04) and need info for finding a nursing job... what are good hospitals or long term care/subacute facilities to work for? Are there agencies that are recommended? What is an average salary range?

I am qualified to do L&D, postpartum, med/surg, long term and subacute care nursing. Have management experience.

I have read from other threads that Vegas hospitals are very understaffed and staff is STRESSED. Does this translate into $$ if you are willing to deal with it or is it better working conditions (i.e. more control over your own destiny) working for an agency?

Please any info will help!!

Thanks,

while I am not a "nevada RN" I work for the VA Administration which has an outpatient facility, home health and a small inpatient facility in Vegas. The pay is pretty decent when you consider the "perks" -- great benefits and I don't think you can beat how many holidays we get. :roll I haven't checked their postings in a while - but I do supervise staff in a non-RN arena so I know they have jobs available and they are getting ready to expand their home health service line and I know they are going to be hiring quite a few nurses for this.

I also know the teaching hospital pays quite well -- and you are right, the nurses are stressed. I can't tell you if that translates into more money or not. One of my former employee's wife works their and she is always busy.

Good luck......if you are interested in the web address for jobs let me know!

Specializes in ICU, psych, corrections.

Ask Iliel...she has had some good advice for me. Do a search for her posts and you will see some regarding Vegas come up. I live in Northern Nevada and we are thinking of relocating there after I graduate only because the cost of living is much cheaper there than here in Reno. And the nurses get paid well....starting pay in the low to mid $20 range, without shift diff. I think she has recommended Mountain View and to stay away from Valley, but don't quote me on that! Also, I got a brochure from St. Rose Dominican and it looked like a nice hospital.

Nothing.

nothing.

Please, oh please contact my boss, Lisa Holtzclaw, Perinatal Unit Manager at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas! Her phone number is 702-731-8297! You can also contact her my mail at 3186 S. Maryland Parkway, LV, NV 89109 at the hospital. Be sure to write "L&D" on lower corner of envelope, as it will help get mail to her faster!

We are in tremendous need of experienced nurses, as three new hospitals have opened recently, "stealing" some of our staff!

Sunrise does 400+ deliveries a month, so the place is always hopping!

But I'd rather be busy than "knitting at the desk, waiting on a primip" if you know what I mean!

Our salaries are comparable to other hospitals in the city.

Feel free to email me at my regular addresss!

Haze

L&D at Sunrise x 22 years!

Thank you all for your replies, info, and advice. I am still looking and processing all this info, thanks again!!

:angryfire Oh please Haze, don't say the new hospitals are stealing your nurses. We all know most of us are unhappy about the nurse/patient ratio,(it's 8 to 1, with NO cna) @ Mountain View and we are expected to care for med surg patients, gyn's and er over flow. I am a postpartum and nursery nurse and haven't a clue how to take care of thyroidectomy's (which we also get on our floor). I'm hoping that the new hospitals will allow us to concentrate on our specialty and not all the other patients we have dumped on us.:angryfire

Thanks for the info and the hint on Mountain View. I am thinking of trying it out there next year. I talked to the board and they were really happy to hear I would want to obtain my license and work there. I hear there are plenty of jobs, but stress is high and what about mandatory overtime?

Don't get me wrong, Mountain View is a great hospital, I'm going on 7 years there and we have a great CEO, Mark Howard, but our Managers don't seem to care about the nurses, just the bottom line $$$$$$$$, they care more about making their Managers happy. But all in all I would not want to work anywhere else but Mountain View, and I have worked at other hospitals in the valley.

Mandatory Overtime does not seem to be a problem with our hospital. We work 12 hour shifts and in our department OB/GYN/Nsy we seem to have more of a problem with too many nurses, so we frequently get called off or put on call or split shifts with another nurse. I can't speak for other areas in the hospital. The Heart Care Unit, IMC, ICU, ER seem to be always short staffed. Our unit is the only one that does not have CNA's. Good CNA's are hard to find from what I understand talking to other nurses in our hospital.

We have 2 new hospitals just opened here, Spring Valley and Southern Hills (which is our sister hospital) just opened today, they have 130 beds. There are many nurses that work 2 or 3 different hospitals.

I love LAs Vegas, it's been a great experience living and working here.

Hope this helps, good luck
