New Grad Neuro Floor or Neuro ICU

Hello all! I am looking for some advice from seasoned nurses.

I have recently graduated this past May with an accelerated BSN. I entered a Nurse residency program and have the option of either starting a job on a Neuro/Trauma ICU or the Neuro stepdown unit. During my residency I feel prepared to enter the Neuro stepdown floor, however I feel scared with the ICU job even though I am ultimately interested in pursuing a career in critical care. Would you suggest I gain some general nursing experience first on the Neuro step down floor prior to going to the ICU or should I take this great opportunity and accept the position straight into the ICU?

I am just worried that I won't be prepared for the ICU. I still know little about A-lines, CVP lines and am getting comfortable with vent settings. Some of my mentors are telling me to "go with my gut" and choose which floor "felt right". If that is the case, then I would choose the Neuro step down unit. However, I know the ICU has somewhat of a learning curve and I dont want to pass up that opportunity.

If anyone could comment with any advice that would be very helpful. I need to make my decision this week.

Have a wonderful week!

Curious- have you brought the question of how you would be transitioned into a critical care role to your facility? To me, asking that question would show a good concern about quality of learning, especially if you put it like, "I don't know much about x,y, and z....yet. I plan on studying up on my own- of course- but what would my other resources for learning to be an awesome critical care nurse be?"

Disclaimer: also a new/er grad, working in ortho/neuro for 6 months.
