Nervous about starting in the NICU

Specializes in rn in nicu.

I just accepted a job in a level 3 NICU as a GN, and am pretty nervous, but so excited! I have always wanted to do NICU, but we have never had clinical in it. I have done a lot of research on the pt population, and the role of the RN in a NICU. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for a GN, and/or any texts that I should read before I start in August. Thanks so much! :heartbeat

Specializes in NICU.

I started out in NICU too and I'm sooo glad I did. Like you, I had never done any clinicals in it or really even stepped foot in a NICU other than a tour we did. The only tips I have is learn everything you can & ask lots and lots of questions. It's ALWAYS better to be safe and ask, than not ask because you don't want to risk sounding dumb or clueless. I have been in the NICU just over a year now and I still have questions. The book we used in our internship was by Merenstein & Gardner and called Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care. It's a good book with lots of info but it's a pretty dry textbook. Best of luck! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
