Nervous. Shadowing in the NICU on Friday

Hi Everyone!

So... I go in for my shadowing as the second part of my interview for the NICU on Friday. I am super nervous. The nurse manager said she will also have me sit and talk with two nurses on her unit as part of the interview. Any words of advice for the shadowing? I've been trying to read up on the NICU lately but between studying for the HESI and the NCLEX and finishing up my program I haven't had a whole lot of time.

I am super excited and hope I get the position, so anything you can offer would be appreciated!

By the way, I think this board is great!

Good luck! I don't think that they will expect you to come with a ton of NICU knowledge. My advice is to just look and listen. Ask questions, don't act like you know everything. Take every opportunity to participate and watch things on the unit. Show them that you really want to be there! Have a great day!

Thanks for the advice Kate. I am slightly relieved to hear your words. :-) I was worried that I would go in there and receive some kind of a quiz and then drawing a blank, or flat out not knowing. I sure hope I get this job. It will take off so much stress of knowing I can end my job search. NICU and OB (I love babies!) are my first choices, so I've been kinda picky about where I am applying. This hospital is a great hospital too! I did my clinical rotation there and really enjoyed the staff. When I went to the unit for my interview I literally got chills and got excited about the possibility of working there. I think it would be so amazing to be able to be a part of helping a little life thrive and help in aiding the growth/development of little ones who need that extra love, attention to detail, and passion for the career. :-)

SO, we shall see! I will keep you all updated! Thanks again for the advice!

As PreemieRNKate said don't worry about having NICU knowledge. Ask questions and be curious about everything. Be friendly, but don't overdo it. Just make sure they know that you are appreciative and honored to have the opportunity to shadow and spend time hanging out in the unit.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
