Neighbors trying to get depressed pt. to sign over her house to them.

Published

Hi.

I have a sistuation with a patient who owns her own home. She is depressed, very dependent and has allowed her neighbors to slowly incringe on her independence. They started off by being"helpful", then went to parking their cars on her property, back-hoing her front lawn, wanting her to put up homeless people, now suggesting she sign over her house to them (or their church) This is all according to the patient, and I believe her. there r even past references to all this back in her chart.

So, other than counceling her to set limits, keep bondaries, say NO, etc., what do I have to go in in order to get these people investigated.

I have set her up with a case manager, but I hate it when people take advantage of someone who is in a pitiful situation. My patient also says that her neighbors are part of a church psych. rehab home that is all over the country. Any suggestions???

Thanks.

Is there anybody that could be granted a power of attorney or guardianship for your patient? That would keep the vultures at bay....

Every state should have a department of Adult Protective Services. I would definitely notify them. Your facility's social work department should have the number.

thanks. will do tomorrow

Yes I have heard of "neighbors" getting possession of person's cars and even their homes. Hopefully, Adult protective services can step in before it is too late. Please keep us informed as to what happens in this case. Thanks :)

Just an update on the case. I and a LCSW went out to the patients house today. It is full of junk everywhere, probably rats, a real disaster. This pt. obviously cannot take care of herself. We are calling in The Senior Team who will go access her situation, help her clean and throw out stuff, etc. I didn't see any signs of her front yard being plowed up...thanks for your support.

success story: I called our PERT team, who went out to see this client and they are organizing a group to help her sort through and get rid of all the junk and even are bringing a dumpster for her. she is so grateful, as the mess was just too overwhelming. I feel really good about whats happened for her. thought you all would like to know.

That's great news! Thanks for letting us know what happened. :)

Good for you in advocating for this woman! It has to make you feel good to see positive things happening for her. I know it made me feel good to read the positive outcome you posted, thanks!
