need info please! did you use caveduers in ns?

hi! i'm currently taking prereqs for ns and a person told me you use cadavers in ns. is this true? if this is true that will totally freak me out! i am hoping to go to neosho county, washburn or baker. anyone who went there please fill me in. thanks in advance.

Do you mean cadavers?

I'm not in your area, so I can't speak for your local schools; your best bet would be to contact them directly to see what is used in A&P labs.

I do know that some schools use cadavers, others use cats or fetal pigs. My lab used cats, and as a cat lover, I was a bit wierded out about it. But it wasn't bad, and it really was an awesome learning experience.

Just curious, why do cadavers freak you out? For nursing school, they are a great learning tool and you will probably see more than 1 dead body during your career.

i understand that i will see dead people in my career. it is just the whole issue of death i haven't ever been very comfortable w/ it. so i was just curious so if this is true i can prepare myself before had. i agree it is a great way to learn but some are more squemish than others

Gotcha Maybe you could see if you could visit a morgue sometime in advance before school so that you can freak out and get it out of your system a little, without having to be in front of your instructors/classmates. It also might be a good idea even if you don't use cadavers in school. Best of luck to you on your acceptance to nursing school

thanks, i was also thinking about going to the bodies exibit. i thought it might be a little more exposure to the "cadaver" experience. thanks again.

Neosho county does not use cadavers. I seriously doubt that Baker or Washburn do.

If you want to avoid cadavers, take your A&P at a community college. Cadavers are expensive, and no community college has the cash for that.

Up in Missouri, we used them, but we also had frogs, rats, fetal pigs, cats....and random organs from various donors. The only thing that grossed me out was the constant smell of formaldehyde! Gosh! I had such a horrible headache by the end of a three hour lab!! What kind of nursing were you wanting to go into if you are freaked out by dead people? I'm a senior in ns, but I've already had a patient die, and helped nurses get countless bodies into bags and off to the morgue. Good luck.

At Washburn you do use human cadavers. There is only one class that actually prepares them, the other classes simply learn off of them. Otherwise there are separate body (legs, arms, others) parts that you also learn off of. During all of that you are also disecting a cat. Good luck with everything!!

Ok you know what freaks me out more than cadavers...

People in caskets at funeral homes... they don't LOOK dead... it's not natural. But seeing someone dead in a hospital room that died a few hours ago doesn't bother me.

exactly! that is what freaks me out too! i haven't actually seen a dead person in hospital room only at funeral homes in caskets and that is what freaks me out. its like there going to set up and say surprise it was all just a prank!!

used them at ksu. loved the class but some people had issues. it was optional to even view the infant cadaver (we did not dissect the infant but did the other adult ones) but the rest of the class was not.
