Need Advise - Accelerated BSN Pre-requisites and University and College Information

Published

Hi,

I am Anu and i have been reading this forum for past 1 week and it looks like this is one of most valuable website. I am from india presently living in Atlanta Georgia. I have done Master of Science in Microbiology and Bachelor of Science in Microbiology/Chemistry/Botany and had worked for 2 years in hospital as Nursing Assistant and Medical Lab Research Analyst.

I am looking for Second Degree accelerated BSN programs anywhere in USA. I am planning to take Anatomy and Physiology this summer. I did most of my education in India and we have a different course requirements.

Can anyone suggest me a school or a college that has reasoable Pre-requisites.

I have completed the Following courses in the past 6 years -

Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry

Medical Microbiology, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Physiology, Virology, Botany and Zoology, Fermentation Technology, English and many other Molecular Biology Courses.

This website i was looking for accelerated BSN programs.

I am willing to take Anatomy and Physiology and Nursing related courses.

There are many courses that are irrelevant to Nursing Program like Sociology, Philiso/Religion, Human Growth & Devel, Nutrition, English Literature and i found some universities asking for strange COurses requirements not required for any Nursing Program.

After Completing 17 years inclusing MS in Microbiology and 2 years of Hospital Experience, DO I STILL NEED TO DO THIS COURSES FOR ADMISSION.

CAN ANYONE SUGGEST ANY AVERAGE UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGES WHERE I CAN apply for Fall Semester.

Your advise is deeply appreciated.

Thanks

Anu

Anu, you should check out

www.discovernursing.com

there are tons of schools that you can look at and see which school will take your credits. Each school differe b/w 2-4 classes which is such a pain. So pick out the ones in your area and stick to them. I recommend to look in your area cause its cheaper for in state tuition. Also, if you are having a tough time getting into the BSN program, I suggest to do your ASN which wouldnt take a long time and you can eventually do your BSN online to get into the master program or you can take a semester worth of classes to get into the master program..

hope this helpes..good luck!

Hello ANU789,

You might want to try Georgia State University, Kennesaw and/or Emory School of Nursing. Each of these schools have accelerated programs for students that have already obtained a degree. Each school has different pre req requirements. The best thing to do is to talk to an advisor of each of these schools that may lead you in the right direction.

I hope this helps:wink2:

Thank you to all my friends who replied in a short time. The website information is very useful.

After doing research, I want to apply for associate degree which can be done 12-18 months. are there any colleges or Universities which offer Accelerated Associated Degree in Nursing for people who already completed BS and MS and have some hospital experiece.

Any feedback is deeply appreciate

Waiting for a Positive Response.

Thanks

ANU

You can do an accelerated BSN in 12 to 18 months. To my knowledge there is no such thing as an accelerated ADN, because all you would need (I'm assuming) would be clinicals. I have a BS and took A&P, Chem, and Micro, and it would have taken me two years to do an ADN due to the required sequence of clinicals. In fact, there was one semester where I would have had nothing to take, because the next class in the progression was offered in the spring only and not in the fall. Duke's ABSN will take sixteen months and I will earn 15 hours of Master's level credit in the process.

Granted, an ADN IS usually cheaper than another BS.

Good luck with whatever avenue you choose!

Hi Anu,

Did you do your pre-reqs here in the US? If not, you have to get your courses evaluated by an independent body (I forgot their name). Most of the time, they will not accept any English, sociology, etc. The anatomy and physiology courses must have been taken in the last 5 years at a US school (they don't normally take them from outside the US).

In general the community colleges are cheaper, BUT they have such long waiting lists to get in. If you have a community college near by that has a ADN program (those are 2 years long, there are no accel'd ones), then take some classes there so you can get some priority ranking for that school.

The ADN program do not care if you already have a degree. They are only concerned whether you have done the pre-reqs for their specific nursing program.

Are you a US citizen? If not, the schools have less financial aid opportunities.

As far as I can tell, the CC's and Accel'd nursing school programs are all impacted. You need a strong GPA for your pre-reqs and you'll probably have to take a TEAs test or some other entrance test. You'll have to contact each school to find out their exact requirements. Good luck.

The local CC where I live has an 18 month accelerated ADN:

Startup costs (including stethoscope, uniform, , etc.) are $1200, NCLEX is $400... and the rest of the academic bill is footed by Sutter Health.

The nursing program at Sac City had a 100% passing rate in the NCLEX last year. Attrition in this program has been fairly high... it's really intense and challenging. My cousin's a student in it right now, and while she's always stressing over studying for school, she says she's getting an excellent education (she's used to high stress and hard work, though... she was a nationally ranked swimmer in high school and was co-captain of her division 1 swimteam during her undergrad years).

edit: if you're willing to do 2 years instead of 18 months, you can always look into Macon State's ADN program for obtaining your RN. It's far from expensive, especially since you're a Georgia resident.

Anu, do you want to be a nurse?? With all of those courses you could become a physician's assistant in the same amount of time. It's seems that those upper level courses wll not be utilized in the role of an RN.

Anu, there is also Miami Dade Community College in Florida that has a one year ADN program. I have a applied to it but I dont qualify, I think, cause I havent taken the entrance exam. This whole process is way too lenghty and can also be discouraging. But DO NOT give up.

You should also look into physician's assistant program like someone mentioned above. I have also heard you can do your MSN with out a nursing degree...maybe you should look into that!

Good luck
