Need advice on reserves

Published

Hi, I just wanted some advice to see what my options are. I'm interested in going into the reserves however was wondering if anyone would know if I would start as an enlist or would I be able to go in as an officer. Currently I have a BS in Biological Science and an Associates in Nursing. I am a recent nursing graduate and thus have limited experience. I know if I were to enlist I would not be going in doing nursing work however once I get either my Masters or Bachelors in Nursing does that change? Also what can I expect in the Reserves (either Air Force or Navy). I was also looking into National Air Guard as well. I talked to a Navy Recruiter and am under the impression that I would start as an enlist rather than an officer although I didn't ask him that specifically. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you will start enlisted at first in the reserves, at least Army & Navy. Not sure about the AF since I heard at one time they would take a ADN who had a bachelor degree in something else; not sure if they still do. You need to speak with a Healthcare recruiter not an enlisted recruiter to find out what each service is taking right now to include experience level. It is not as easy as it used to be to change from enlisted to officer as it was in the past so you might not be able to switch once you get your BSN.
