Nurses Disabilities
Published Aug 24, 2013
Hi, I am 53 years old and currently on disability due to back injuries, DDD, sciatica and some other stuff I can't remember. I went back to work for nearly 2 years, but I ended up having to go back on disability. My husband does not make a great wage, and my benefit is not very high. I need to try to work about 8-10 hours per week in a position that does not include lifting, prolonged standing or walking lengthy halls. I also have radiculopathy down both arms and have great pain in shoulders, arms and hands which can include a tremor at times. I've only done nursing my whole life, but have never done med-surg and haven't worked in a hospital since 1994. I am having a hard time trying to figure out what I could possibly do, if anybody would even have me. Is anybody in same situation or does anyone have ideas for extreme part-time work (doesn't have to be in nursing or medical). Need some ideas!! Sorry for being so long and I appreciate any ideas. Thank you!!

Receptionist at a medical office? Or working for an insurance company? It might be hard to find something that is only 8-10 hrs a week :/ good luck though!!!

Thank you for your reply!! I know that it will be extremely difficult, but I'm not good at thinking out of the box!! Maybe I can tutor nursing students!!

I'm currently working VERY part-time doing admissions for my skilled-nursing facility. Physically I'm fair-to-middling, but I can't do anything that requires handling multiple demands at one time, good short-term memory, or thinking fast on my feet---I get distracted too easily and have memory issues. This situation gives me the 1:1 time with patients that I enjoy and absolves me of responsibility for them once I hand them off to the charge nurse. Perhaps you could give something like this a try?
Viva--that's sounds like something I could do. I don't know of any facility in my area that does that though. I will have to ask around. Thanks for the input.

Could try district school nurse part time. Try edjoin.org to search near you. (Just make sure you will not be runnung around to different schools).
Could also as your local non profit clinic if they need very part time nurse. Sometimes they do!
Thank you all for your responses it really has given me some ideas!!

You can check into teaching NCLEX prep courses. I taught for Kaplan for 7 years (GRE/GMAT/LSAT), and the pay was really good for very part-time, flexible hours. I know they're generally desperate for NCLEX teachers.
Thanks! I'm going to check this out!

Perhaps telephone triage. Or doing insurance company case reviews.
Thanks. I am unfortunately, without med-surg experience. My last 2 jobs were doing nurse manager at Assisted Living and Specialty Care (Dementia unit). Before that, office nurse for pediatrics. I haven't worked in a hospital since 1994!!! I am keeping my ears open and putting out the word that I am looking for something very part-time or PRN. Would like to do fulltime but think I could handle that unless it was telephone work. I am hoping that something will be at right time, right place. Thanks!
