I just took the NCLEX - PN, my thoughts.

Nursing Students NCLEX

I feel like burning most the LVN review books I bought as they did me no good what-so-ever on the NCLEX. The questions I got came out of left field. Stuff that wasn't taught in school like post mordum care for jewish men and questions about the Buhdist faith. I couldn't believe the questions I got. It felt like I guessed at half the questions. What a terrible feeling I have now. I have went threw the ENTIRE Saunders LNV review book and cd TWICE, that's 6,000 questions, as well as the kaplan review book, "lvn made easy", and the mosby cd. Total review questions and rationales done exceeded 8,000. Yet it didn't help me at all. Yes I read the rationales for ALL the questions/ answers. The NCSBN.ORG review was the only thing that helped me as the questions were similar to the NCLEX.

The VAST majority of question were priority questions. I had learned all the tricks to answer these in the Kaplan book. Only one big problem....the priority questions in kaplan are a complete joke (very easy) compared to the actual NCLEX ones which were brutal.

My computer shut off at 85 and I am positive I got the 85th question wrong because I looked it up when I got home. I hear if the computer stops at 85 and you miss the last question ...you most likely failed if you weren't doing so hot. I wanted to throw up when I left the testing center.

So hear I sit and have to wait 3 weeks to get result in CA. I will start checking the LVN board website next week, but I have a bad feeling my name won't be up there and I will have to take the NCLEX again.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and probably on the wrong discussion. But I recently just graduated on October 18, 2007. My school recently implemented the NLN-PN examination which consisted of Adult health, maternal/baby, pediatrics, fundamentals, pharmacology, mental health and finally comprehensive. I have to pass all with an 80% in order for my school to submit my application to the board. Right now, I am feeling very discouraged to taking the board because my scores for Adult Health & pediatrics came back as 71%. I'm confused and frustrated too. I know it's not the end of the world, but I still feel miserable. Any advice??? :o

So, when you get the results in the mail, is it small envelope pass, big fail or its a regular envelope.. I really need to know cuz i get my results soon!... i'm soo scared!

its a big envelope for passed. those about to take the test, i suggest not to pressure yourself. study only when you feel like it but study everyday, sometimes i would only do 20 questions but other times i would kick ass and do 3-400. i feel the mind works better if youre not bored. lotsa rest and ginko biloba just in case. never skip a break when youre studying too.....i got alot of basic nursing skill questions and delegating to NAs, plus critical thinking...

the first time i took the test when i got the result it came with short envelope and it says i didnt pass..second time i took it i got my result & it was on the big envelop & it says i failed again...:( this is my 3rd time taking the test now) im not worried wheter i get my result with small or big envelope im just prayin that it will say I PASS!

Hey Greenapple. my advice is to go online and find study questions relating to what your weakest areas are on. I heard from numerous others, the Kaplan is a very good resource to use. I know this sounds chliche, but how are you study the Adult Health & pediatrics? Maybe it would help if you took notes while you read. Another strategy is instead of reading the whle entire chapter, focus on specific areas that you are having trouble on. Most importantly, don't give up! Keep trying. I hope you get an 80% or better so you school can send your application the the Boards. Good luck. I wish you all the best. :):):)

Just a question to you guys on the forum. Does any one know how much NCLEX-PN costs? I live in Miami, Florida and I would like to know. Thank you. :nurse::):):)

I thought I failed too but I passed. The less questions you get, the better your chances. So far its been consistent, but its not guaranteed. I know only one person who failed after stopping the computer at 85 and she was really bad. You cant really study for test like this because anything can come out. You just have to trust yourself. I expected to take it again but good thing I dont. Just be ready, its not the end of the world. It would suck more if you dont try again....

PKRADK: I hope you're right! I heard this too - that IF the computer stops early, maybe you don't know if you passed or failed, BUT it does mean that the computer figured it out pretty quickly. Therefore it does mean you either passed fantastically or failed miserably! Mine stopped very quickly, don't know from 75 - 95, I wasn't keeping track of the number. I truly don't know, but I do know that there was only a handful a questions I had to guess. Much of the stuff, it's true, you have to have a lot of common sense. On the other hand, you DO have to know lab values, symptoms, and so on. The ncsbn's "detailed" outline tells you exactly what lab values you need to know - it's a list of about 20 values, nothing exotic. It's on their website. No amount of common sense will make up for not knowing how common medical problems will present themselves. The ncsbn is very serious about not revealing the contents of the test - doing so could even result in not getting your license. It wouldn't help anybody anyway, because you will have no idea of the content - maybe you get lots of meds, maybe you get lots of math, maybe it keeps asking you several things about the same condition. I think the bottom line is you don't have to know a million obscure drugs and conditions, but you do have to know common illnesses, drugs, symptoms very well. Ooops, I'm obsessing. Anyway good luck to both of us!

I think it's always 200 bucks.

In response to Diahni. Yes the nursing process, maslow's, and the ABC's. LIVE THOSE LOL. Your patient always comes first in any questions. For example... pt is complaining of SOB, what do you do first? Fowlers, check o2 sat, or auscultate. You stabilize your pt first.

Kaydrian,

I think you could practically write a "rules for the NCLEX" that would help mightily: ALWAYS assess before acting (yup, the nursing process,)

okay, here's some others, "What part of airway, breathing and circulation don't you understand?"

There is always something you could do before calling the doctor, with the exception of the above ABCs. Then there's no time for the doc.

Maslow matters, but isn't it obvious that somebody's serious physical condition will trump a mental state?

The rules of prioritization: who is least stable?

Communication questions: it's always about the patient, and their mental state at the moment. Focus on that. Don't refer to yourself, or things they might be able to do later on. "You seem very upset" and its varieties beats content filled responses.

wow. Somebody at school told my it was 400 bucks. Of course, I know that is not exact amt, but I wanted to know anyways. Thank you. :):):):nurse:

I just took my NCLEX this morning. It stopped around 105-108. There were a ton of check all that applies (which I suck at) and follow-ups. YUK! I totally feel like I failed. I swear to God there were drug questions and diseases I've never even heard of or studied in class. Uggh!! So far I've read that most of the people on this thread that had 85 and shut off passed, so now I'm paranoid I failed. It says I can find out in 2 business days, but that would be Thanksgiving. So, I probably won't get my results until Monday.

My nclex pn cost 200 dollars. I was told by a fellow classmate that when you passed you will be required to pay an additional 100-150$ for your license. I can't remember the exact amount. So hopefully I'll find out in about 5 more days the results and then I can give you an exact amount.
