Failed NCLEX 3 times..I want to be an RN so bad!!

  1. Hello all. I am new to this website and have already found it motivating and helpful. I just found out Saturday (May 23, 2009) that I failed my NCLEX-RN yet again...the THIRD time. I am an emotional wreck right now and need some help. I have studied so hard and ACED every practice test I've taken. I've come to the conclusion that I am suffering from severe test anxiety. While I will be seeking help with that, I would like some tips and feedback that I CAN pass and be an RN! I've been an LVN for 3 years and I passed (the 1st time) my NCLEX-PN with 85 questions, which means I ACED my LVN test! Why cant I pass my RN test?!?!! I'm so confused and upset. Its literally heartbreaking. I am doing exam cram and some test anxiety stuff, but would like some more tips. Thanks to all for listening! I am such a positive person but failing a 3rd time is making it hard to "keep my chin up". I just want to cry

    hi lindsey,

i wanted to reply to you because i am waiting to take my n-clex tomorrow...and i wanted you to know that this is my third time, too! i'm trying everything in my power to absolutely not focus on tomorrow because i can completely sympathize with you about feeling heartbroken and emotioanly exhausted. i promise you that you are not the only one going through this! i know how hard you've worked, and i can certainly relate to the agony of doing practice exam after practice exam, thinking things will be ok, only to get a "status: failed" when you log in for your results. keep trying!!!!! i will certainly make sure to get back to you to tell you what my results are when i get them, and just know that this test is a total injustice to all prospective nurses! seriously, i have not found one book, or even taken one class that has helped me completely, or guided me in the exact direction for prep for taking the real thing, and i am more than willing to petition to get a group of people together who feel the same way we do and write to the national nursing boards to protest this type of examination.

i have very close family friends, both of whom are doctors, and they just recently went through their 10-year recertification exam. when i babysat for them this past weekend, i explained how you cannot go back to review or move on to the next question in this exam. they both looked at me cross-eyed and said, "what????" if they allow physician's this luxury, then they certainly should allow it for nurses as well. this exam is a complete inaccurate measure of the knowledge that we have and how great of nurses we will be! hang in there.....you are definitely in my thoughts and prayers!!!!

remember what i said about how inaccurate this test truely is, and i am prepared to go to any higher level to create a petition to have this entire process changed!!

Do you know which area(s) you are struggling in? I have heard, that sometimes it is more difficult for an experienced LVN (or experienced foreign nurse) to pass the NCLEX because it's designed for students without real world experience who only have textbook answers. Assuming that is true, my best advice to you would be to ignore what you know from experience and test as if the only nursing knowledge you have is what you were given in RN school.

How many times can you take the NCLEX a year?

It all depends on the state. Some states allow unlimited attempts every 45 or 90 days where others limit it to 3 times and a refresher course some also say if you fail after refresher course you have to complete nursing all over again

Thanks to all of you for good advise and warm words...I need that now! =) Fortunately, I live in the wonderful state of Texas and we can take it every 45 days for an unlimited amount within 5 years of graduation. I havent quit reached my 1 year graduation mark..so I think Im good to go I have also heard it is hard for LVNs to pass the NCLEX-RN, but LVNs have the NCLEX-PN to take! So its not like I've never taken a test like this before. That is what is throwing me off because I ACED my LVN state board with the minimum amount of questions. I am going to regroup and relax and then hit the studying hard again along with some test anxiety therapy. Thanks again to all of you for being so encouraging!

I am with you I can imagine how you feel and how heart broken you are. But I truly think you should take a small break. Go a wk without reviewing nursing material including tests. that way when you return you will have a fresh and rested mind. Don't get discouraged you know the material you are just applying your critical thinking, overanalyzing questions and beating yourself over a few mishaps. I know you can do it and you will, just take a break i know it's going to be almost impossible but at this point you have to.

    hi lindsay,
i just wanted to update you to let you know that i too have failed my n-clex for the third time. i just received my results saturday and i pretty much slept all day. i thought of you and how i wanted to tell you about it so you know you're not alone. i saw that you did not get discouraged and i am proud of you! i just registered to take the kaplan rn course....for the second time!!! and i am going to start a petition about how unfair this exam is. like you i did absolutely everything. i read book after book, did practice exam after exam, read my old course book, and felt quite confident going in. i guess i was wrong.

i plan to take the test again right after my kaplan course, but i'm going to see if there's a way to send out a mass post for people who are in our position so that if they choose, they can come along with me to make this petition happen. let me know what you think and if you have any additional ideas!

i'll keep you posted, and feel free to do the same:spin:

Sorry to hear that you failed a 3rd time too. This HAS to be the hardest thing I have ever gone through. I am having to learn that this ISN'T over for me and that its not the end of the world. There are many more worse things going on that far exceeds my failing. However, it is still a very tough pill to swallow. To update all of you on whats going on with me now. I have picked myself up off the floor and started this studying for the 4th time. My attitude is different and my head is held high. I am on an 8 week study plan with the new 4th Edition Saunders book. I will retest in mid to end of August...which is just next month!!!! Honestly, I am pumped! I keep telling myself when I'm studying that "I am becoming and EXPERT in nursing!" And...."You cannot saw sawdust." Its there and there isn't anything you can do about it but MOVE ON!! Thanks for all your support! I love this website! I will keep everyone posted when I test in August and that I will succeed and be an RN next month!!! I (we) can do this!! Through God, all things are possible! God promises that he will never give us more than we can handle!

i agree with you..they should abolish this exam and create a more easier and fair exam to all nurses.

Hello Lindsey! Your postive attitude is very contagious. I took the nclex-rn last thursday July 2nd here in Texas also and I failed. It was my first time but it still hurt to know that you failed it. I was using Saunders and i was very disappointed that i didn't help me at all. I don't have the motivation to study. I really need to pass this exam. I have paid pearson vue already to retake the exam and i don't know yet when i should take it. I have no idea what reviewer i will be using. I'm still depressed right now fr the result. Im hoping and praying that you will pass it for the 4th time. God Bless! and goodluck!!!!!!!!
