The Male Nurse

Not to start a ***** session - just light hearted.

I noticed a few male nurses post here. Do you guys ever get tired of these comments?

1. Are you a male nurse?

2. Are you going to get your MD?

3. Can you get me the nurse Doctor?

4. Patients who call you doc and doctor when they fully know you are a nurse.

5. Hollywood portrayels like in "Meet the Parents"

6. Those idiot male nurses who rape, abuse, or mercy kill.

7. The patients who feel compelled to recall their experience with male nurses in the past and tell you they feel male nurses are far superior to female nurse.

I love being a nurse sometimes. I always love being a male. Occasionally I love being a male nurse. I know it isn't just me who hears all these things. Some times it is a hoot. I want to say oops you missed a line. LOL

I actually don't get tired of them, nor do they bother me. Often they make me laugh and I share them with others.

But you left out the most obvious one. Male nurse = gay nurse. I have had more fun with this one than any other. Many of my friends who are nurses, some gay, some not, have shared absolutely the funnest events over this preception. Although, a politically touchy subject, and maybe not for this forum.

My daughter had the school system convinced she was from an alternative livestyle couple throughout her middle school years. (My wife has a boy name). She repeated the event in high-school, we actually went along with it. I couldn't help it, it was to funny!!

Something I've been getting quite a bit that kind of cracks me up is some of the more elderly guys call me honey. I don't know if it's out of habit or if the percocets are working a little too well but I'll be on my way out the door and I'll hear "thanks honey".

And don't you guys get tired of us women asking you to help lift? Ha ha. I've made a conscious effort to stop that!

Good for you Sunny. Have you noticed how the males seem to get the biggest, and the behavior problem customers. As well as the ones that don't speak English as their first language. Sorry to get off the track. No offense intended to the female health care professionals.

Laughter is the best remedy and tool. I have had all the experiences you mentioned. I have had MDs' completely disregard a female nurse and attempt to discuss their patient with me, until I state I am not the nurse they need. ALL my experiences have been positive though. I have never experienced the "eat the young" syndrome. My son is graduating as a nurse next month, my daughter is graduating with a degree in business and I am glad to see barriers coming down. I work now as a death investigator and most of the detectives I work with are females...........! Still some some people with locked minds though.

one of my fondest desires is to work in an L&D setting. I am presently in Oklahoma and there is no way that will happen here. I love the entire wellness model that most L&D's are based on. I have worked in the newborn nursery, post-partum and women's services. I just can't crack the L&D barrier, so, I have decided to play on the you must be gay attitude towards male nurses. I am willing to bet that if I am preceived to be gay it will be much easier to get into an L&D position. So, when I move in the near future, I will not try to dispel the rumors about me, I will share hair color tips and cooking tips with all my fellow female nurses and I will go by a new name, something masculine, yet with a touch of femininity. If it works, I may just get to that spot in L&D that is waiting for me. So very shortly I will be running a contest to come up with a new name for work. Perhaps something like Robbie or Kelly.

You know, just so y'all are aware that everyone out there doesn't think you're flaming...I've NEVER met a gay male nurse until THIS YEAR. Most male nurses I work with are young, attractive, married, and very hetero. I find it odd that most people assume they're gay. Now, if you were hairdressers, that'd be different...

By the way, hotspam....please see the topic 'what does your user name mean' under general conversation...I'm DYING of curiosity over here...lol!

haji,

I have a good friend who works L&D. He is still in the Air Force and in Japan right now.

His wife was a L&D nurse too I think. She got promoted and had to leave bedside care. So keep the faith. Maybe you'll get to play catch the baby some day after all.

Haji, I work in an L&D in Tulsa, Oklahoma that has a male nurse. He posts on this bb too, but I haven't seen him lately on the bb. He's familymanrnbsn. I'm not sure how he got the job initially, but you might find him on this bb and ask. Good luck to you!

Being a nurse practitioner, I must say, the thing that amuses me the most is when I explain to my patients what a nurse practitioner is, and how I will be providing their care, how they wait until I finish my explanation and say: "Yes, Doctor, I understand."

The gay thing... that's so passe, who really cares?
