Hey everyone. I obtained my nursing degree 5 years ago. I immediately developed a serious health issue and could not take my NCLEX. Does anyone know which states allow you to take the NCLEX after 5 years? Or do you know a website that would help me? Thank you.

I'd start by looking at the BON websites nearest to whatever state your in. They usually have a good amount of information.
Are you planning on moving to the state you test in? If not, make sure you look at the requirements for obtaining a license by endorsement in your own state. Testing elsewhere may not be an effective workaround.

Just because you might find a state that will let you test now (and that may be doubtful) does not mean that you will (ever) be able to get a license by endorsement in another state that wouldn’t have let you test in the first place. They look at that, you know. Investigate all these variables before you decide. Generally there’s a reason for the rule that you have to take refresher courses if you’re more than 5 yrs out. Prepare for that.

Check with the state(s). Be prepared to take a refresher course (at your expense). I wish you well.

In the best interest of patient safety, I hope you will take a refresher course either way.

When I applied for licensure by endorsement in my current they wanted my diploma, license, the state required child abuse/infection control and background checks. When I took the NCLEX wasn’t looked at.
Regardless I think after 5 years a refresher course is not a bad idea- I think that gap makes the chances of passing the NCLEX low even if you’re allowed to take it.

One needs to have an active license in order to take most refresher courses in order to do clinical hours.

Check with the school that you graduated from. I recently did and they offered to cover the cost for ATI coaching. You passing or failing will still be recorded against your schools Pass/Fail rates and they want to keep those percentages up. I have been out of school much longer than you, so I feel that a refresher course is needed, however it is not required by my state the board. Message me with any questions, you can do this!
