NC Nurse Aide I

Published

Hi everyone!

So I'm applying to the University of North Carolina Wilmington and one of the requirements to apply to the school of nursing is that we be a level one Nurse Aide. This would be all fine and dandy...except I don't even live in North Carolina yet and I won't until June. (My husband is in the Marines and he just got stationed there..I'm finishing the semester up where I'm at right now and moving to NC after that.) So I need to be a Nurse Aide I by the application deadline, August 10. I was wondering if anyone knew of any nursing homes or schools, or any place for that matter in which they offer Nurse Aide I classes near Jacksonville, NC or Wilmington, NC. I would hate to put off applying by another semester just because I haven't met this one requirement! Any help would be soooo greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hey Cass,

I checked online and Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington offers the NA course through their dept of continuing education. Also you should know that you can get the study guide/handbook free from the testing agency and challenge the exam w/o completing the course or clinicals. Just make sure you really focus on the bold steps b/c if you leave those out it will result in failing that skill. There is also a practice written exam so you can see if you need to study up on the classroom/textbook portion of the material. www.asisvcs.com/indhome.asp?CPCAT=0734NURSE

A few people in my nursing program went this route b/c it was a lot quicker and also cheaper. They say that it was difficult finding work as a CNA w/o the clinicals until they started nursing school, but once they started nursing school they were viewed just like the other candidates who went through the na class. I may be wrong, but I don't think the registry shows that you took a class or challenged the exam, just that you passed and are listed as a CNA.

Good Luck!!

Can you get CNA certified in the state you are currently living in? It might be easier to just to transfer your certification/registration when you move states.

Thanks for the replies!

I am currently a CNA in North Dakota. I contacted the NC registry and they said that they don't "transfer" over CNA licenses. Bummer. I did see that you can take the test without taking a class...but I'm applying to UNC-Wilmington and one of their requirements is that a CNAI course be taken with a clinical component. Now when I got my CNA certification in ND I took a class with a clinical component...so I'm thinking I could just challenge the exam and be ok with doing it that way. Needless to say I've tried asking all these questions to the school of nursing and they've been very vague in their answers. What do you all think?

I don't know, seems like if you have taken a class and then challenge the NC exam then you should be ok b/c you have met both requirements taking a class and being a CNA in NC, but you know how some schools can be. It'd be a shame to miss out on applying. Is there a way you can meet in person with an advisor and get some solid answers?

Hi,

I read your post, and I am in the same situation. What did you ever do? I hate to have to wait another semester just to find a CNA course.
