NC DNP-Psych options

Published

The only program in NC to offer the PSYCH DNP Program is Chapel Hill.

Clearly I would like to increase my options of gaining entry into a program, so I have looked at other schools outside of the state that are online.

SO many are not accepting applications from NC nurses. Due to something to do with the governors board only allowing those enrolled in NC programs to have access to clinicals in the state.

So this rules Out Rush University, and quite a few others that say on their website - not accepting applications from NC residents.

Please help me locate a few schools that are online that accept NC students. This is absolutely ridiculous that only one school offers the Psych DNP program and yet I cannot apply to other online schools.

Frustrated

There are a bunch of threads here about this issue. The issue isn't that the state won't allow students to attend non-NC programs; the issue is that, if an on-line, non-NC program wants to operate within the state of NC (offer education to students within the state of NC), it has to meet the same requirements and standards that NC schools are required to meet, and get the same approval from the UNC Board of Governors that NC schools have to get.

From the NC BON website (FAQs page):

Is the NCBON imposing restrictions on out-of-state nursing education programs? I am being told by an out-of-state program that the NCBON is preventing them from admitting NC residents as students.

The NCBON is not imposing restrictions on out-of-state nursing education programs. However, there are regulations in NC which require out-of-state institutions that conduct educational activities in NC, that require a field experience (i.e. student clinical/practicum, student teaching, internship or externship), to be licensed by the University of North Carolina (UNC) System General Administration/Board of Governors. This is a mandate from the United States Department of Education and not associated with the NC Board of Nursing. If the education program is truly a 100% online degree program that does not require a field experience, students may enroll. When considering enrollment in ANY out-of-state nursing program with field requirements, individuals should check with the UNC System to verify licensure status by calling 919-962-4558 or on the UNC System web site at: Licensing Institutions | UNC GA

Out of state schools can get state approval; but they have to apply and go through the process. Since, as the BON notes, this is a Federal requirement, I'm guessing that more and more states are going to be coming into compliance with this as time goes on. Personally, I think it's a good thing that the state is looking out for the interests of state residents by ensuring that on-line programs meet the same standards considered appropriate/necessary for other schools operating in NC.

Hello Guys,

I am looking at different colleges to get a Post Masters Certificate. Are there any suggestions on what schools would be good? I have researched some, but I wanted to get some input from others. Anyone been to any particular school that they recommend or do not recommend?

Thanks for the input,

Ryan

It is the most frustrating thing that the only psych option in NC is UNC Chapel Hill. And if NC students want to apply to an online program they are not allowed to do clinical in the state of NC. And even worse - just about all online out of state schools will not allow NC students to even apply because of the NC governors board UNC rule.

When the only DNP psych program In the state takes 5 applicants a year, and no other out of state option available to all other NC students who want to pursue their dream...what in the world are we supposed to do. Move out of state and apply?

Absolutely ridiculous and unfair.

No wonder there's a shortage of providers in this field. NC is shooting itself in the foot.

The Univ. of South Alabama has a online Post Masters Certificate Program for Family Psych that is approved by the UNC board of Governors and you can do clinicals in NC. I called the UNC Board of Governors and spoke with someone personally. Check out this site, this is from the UNC Board of Governors (list of approved programs) https://www.northcarolina.edu/?q=content/approved-degree-programs-licensed-institutions

I totally agree! Free73. This may not work for you but this works for greater good. if I were you, I would focus on getting into NC Chapel Hill. I heard so many terrible stories about many online psych NP students (even from the previously discussed "famous" online program) struggling to find preceptors and sites. Even if they work hard to get the sites, most of them are not in good quality and they do not get well-rounded education. I would focus more on getting education from established program that guaranteed clinical sites.

I have applied to chapel hill. If I don't get in - I'll just keep applying.

I still wish they had more options in the state of nc.

Thanks
