National University Los Angeles- Generic Entry BSN- Cohort 22 (October 2019)

Published

Hi guys! I applied to Cohort 22 for the Generic BSN at the LA campus of National University. I am so anxious to be taking the essay but obviously I still don’t have an appointment date since we haven’t reached the application deadline. I’m super anxious about getting in because I’m not the best writer especially under pressure. I think I do have a great GPA and TEAS scores though. Hopefully, we can start this thread and give updates in our nursing journey. Good luck!

What is your teas score?

Hi, I got a 91.3 for my teas... my GPA is 3.88. I’m reaaally anxious about the essay hhahaaha. Did you apply as well?

No not yet. I have to take the ILR and BST Courses. Do you knownif they’re hard or easy? Hopefully, make it in the October cohort. I’m really nervous also. It’s been a while I’ve been in school. I have to take the TEAS and that’s what I’m really worried about. Any tips on studying? I’m sure you’ll do fine! Don’t stress yourself out, you’re much more ahead than me. Hahaha!

I'm also applying to their BSN program and I'm worried about taking their ILR and BST course as they are out of pocket and not cheap at all. @avocadont13, do you have any insight into these courses?

@jayseeohHave you taken the teas yet? If so what’s your score?

Yeah, I took it last year and got a 77.3 - which from the threads I've been looking at for National University I'm very hesitant to continue and take the two pre-reqs the school requires.

@jayseeoh I am worried too. but I’ve read on other threads and a lot of them say that if you put the time and focus, we will be ok.

Nope, these classes are not hard. As far as I can recall, ILR has a research report and some writing, and BST is pretty much like a Statistics class. FYI, Google will be your friend for BST if you ever have trouble. The deadline for the October 2019 cohort is this Friday, April 19.

For the TEAS, I studied for about a month on and off. I got a 91.3 with Reading being my weakest subject. I would recommend reviewing a lot of Anatomy and Physiology because the science section is mostly that. Also, don't forget to touch up some chemistry like atoms and the periodic table. For Math, it was mostly fractions, algebra, and word problems. It was fairly simple and not to the extent where they would *** if you know how to use the quadratic formula. For English and Language Usage, it was pretty much punctuations, grammar, and spelling. It just wants to know if you know how to write properly with the right punctuations and spelling. For Reading, they have passages followed with questions afterwards. For me, I read the questions first so I know what I'm looking for. Then, I kind of skimmed through but I personally read fast.

I bought the Mometrix TEAS prep book , and I also went to Barnes & Noble (or any bookstore that you have) and spent hours there to take pictures of the TEAS prep books that they had. I was not planning on spending $100+ on these books. I tried reviewing and answering the practice exams on these prep books but be careful because some information are not correct on these prep books. Luckily, the practice tests on these prep books are actually harder than the TEAS itself in my opinion. For me, I think I was very well-prepared because I answered many of the practice exams and aimed for at least 85%

For NU, you can take the TEAS as much as you want, and they will take your highest score. The application process is fairly easy, and it is submitted online. Once the application deadline has passed, they will send you through email (I would think) your appointed date to take the 1-hour proctored essay and the TEAS. HOWEVER, if you had taken the TEAS before this appointed date and you are satisfied with your score, you can bring a print out of your score page and give it to them or send your score from the ATI website. I would just bring a print out of my score because this is free rather than paying a fee on the ATI website. Taking the proctored essay is free but the TEAS costs money (not sure how much).

Don't hesitate and don't be scared to try again because you really would not know the outcome if you don't try. You don't wanna live life wondering what could/would have happened if only you had tried... am I right?

@avocadont13 how is the financial aid for the bsn program like? That’s what scares me the most is having to take out loans since I have bad credit.

I attended the info session yesterday and they answered a lot of my questions, I'm jotting some info that was provided but also note that you will need to attend an info session before applying to the program.

Here's some info that they provided:

  • Estimated Tuition: $45-$50K
  • Orientation: $250 & $2,450 (Done a month prior to start date)
  • Regionally accredited
  • 2.75 overall GPA to apply

The points are divided into 3 categories:

Category 1 - Science & Math GPA (40%)

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Microbiology
  • Biomedical Stats (NU specific)

*Category 2 - TEAS (40%)

  • They will no longer proctor the test after this April deadline Cohort
  • If you're applying to the April 2020 Cohort you will need to schedule your TEAS outside.
  • They take your highest score (you can test multiple times)
  • They advised to have at least 80%+ to be competitive
  • TEAS Locations

* Category 2 - Interview (20%)

  • They said this will also be a major change as the essay portion will be converted into an interview starting with the April 2020 Cohort.

If you don't have a BA/BS you will also need to take the following co-reqs that they recommend you take as soon as you get accepted into the program:

  • SPN 340A - Spanish for the Work Place
  • SPN 341 - Cross-Cultural Communication
  • ILR 260 - Information Literacy (Pre-req)

You might be able challenge or test out if you already speak Spanish.

I took ENG 102 in community college and my academic advisor is checking if taking Library Science 101 combined with ENG 102 will take care of this pre-req. I'm mentioning this because both BST and ILR are not covered by Financial Aid and will need to be paid out of pocket.
