My first ER rotation is tomorrow, I need advice!

Published

Hey guys, its my first post here so hopefully this is the right place to put this. Like the title says its going to be my first time in the ER tomorrow and Im a little nervous. I was hoping some people could kind of walk me through how the ER normally operates. Here are some of my initial questions:

What are the techs responsible for?

How is the relationship with the RN and MD in the ER? Does he get a report from me, or do I get one from him? Do I just walk up to him if I want a pain meds or something like that?

How would I receive information on an incoming patient?

How does the whole admission process go?

How is charting different in the ER?

What should my assessments be like?

How many patients are ER nurses normally responsible for?

What kinds of skills should I review?

Thanks in advance for the input, any information would be a great help. :D

Basically, the primary responsibility in the ER is to answer the immediate needs of the patient. You need to have quick assessment and ABC's are very important. You'll also need review and be acquainted on the different emergency drugs found on your E-Kart.

I think most of your above questions will be answered by the end of your first day.

If you're not sure, ASK!
