Does anyone remember their first dosage calculations test? I am in my first term of a BSN program. There was no instruction on the book (13 chapters we've done so far...) but from what I hear this is pretty much the norm. These are the equivs we were told to know for sure:
(I don't need to know the answers to these, already know em! =) just wanted to clarify that)...only want to know your experience w/your first dosage calc exam...
ounces - ml
mcg-mg-gram
grain-mg
ml-tsp
ml-tbsp
lb-kg
We also need to know how to interpret an MAR. Does anyone remember how hard/easy their first dosage test was? Just curious b/c it seems pretty straight forward. From what I understand they must meet state standards...the tests.
Thanks!

60gr = 1mg
2.2lbs = 1kg
mcg= 1000mg= 1gram
I believe 30ml = 1 oz
5ml = 1tsp 3tsp = 1Tbs
so
15ml = 1Tbs
1st 3 I'm sure of 2nd 3 I'm pretty sure, hope others post to clarify

just rememeber this "phone number" :
5 ml = 1 tsp
3 tsp = 1 tbs
2 tbs = 1 oz
8 oz = 1 cup
2 cups = 1 pint
2 pints = 1 quart
4 quarts= 1 gallon
this has saved me many times. this way you can convert easily.
LOL sorry!! I knew the answers to those conversions =))!! But thank you so much for taking the time to answer anyhow. Shoot I should have said that in my first post. I just wondered if anyone remembered if their first dosage calc test was easy?
But I love the phone number conversion, that is too cute! Thanks.

Do I ever!! I was so nervous I thought I would stroke out! Here are some ex.
1.Med oral susp. 150mg q8hr has been ordered. The infant weight is 6.4kg. Med label reads 75ml w/200mg/4ml. How many ml wil you give?
2.Med label reads 30mg/oz. Admin 55mg. How many Tbsp will you give?
3. You need to give 150mg/kg/dose. The med comes in 0.6g/5ml. Pt wt is 145lbs. How many oz will you give?
4. Kerflex susp. 250mg p.o. is ordered for child weighing 66 lb. The usal child dosage is 25-50mg/kg/day in four divided doses. pharm sends keflex sups. 125mg/5ml. Is the dosage ordered safe? (prove) How many ml would you give to administer one dose?
5.Insulin how to draw up/syringe size to use
6.Reading med labels...identify form, generic name, trade name, dose strength, directions for mixing
7. interpert orders/complete or not/7 compts. of a med order/6 rights
8. calc flow rate ml/hr...gtt/min
I looked in my old notebook & these were some I jotted down during review...hope this helps.:)
Yes this does help, thank you! Wow, you actually had a review?? We only got one email with what conversions we would be responsible for (I pasted the body of the email in my first post). We didn't get sample Q's or anything, and of course, never even once spoke about the book/topic in class! lol. Out of curiousity, did your school teach the dosage calc, or was it self taught? Did your professor ever say you could meet with them if you were struggling? I know math isn't the best subject for everyone. I do okay with it, but during my lower division classes had some "math anxiety" during tests. We have the option to come in a half an hour early....I just might do that (test is on Monday)...that way I will be sure I have plenty of time and can go slow.
Thanks again!
This was part of our skills lab but we only spent like a couple of classes on math. So kinda had a class & kinda self taught. College algebra & higher were pre-reqs so they thought we should "get it" quickly. We could go in anytime & get help & had tutors available. We also had a calc. book that we were responsible for doing X amount of chps. q/wk & turning in. I forgot we also had to do C-F/F-C conversions. I have always hated math & was scared to death but I made it! We now have math on every test & I don't even stress over it! I use dim. analysis & have a great website if ya want it. Good luck:)

I have attached a practice test (that is very similar to our "real" test) for our 3rd semester freshmen ADN students. Hope this helps :)

Oh, I remember!! I was nervous. There were alot of conversion questions, just like tsp to ml, lb to kg.
We would get it marked off wrong if we didnt label correctly, like if the answer was 5 and we were converting to ml, it had to be 5ml.
I was lucky, in the back of my textbook, we had a disc(still have), that has test questions and is interactive. But I discovered the importance of it halfway in to the quarter!
Take a deep breath, you can do it, Just take one question at a time.

Good luck on your exam. I literally soaked my self completely when i was taking my first. I read all the above suggestions, you are in good hands.
Please do not forget these basic formulas:
Dose ordered X Volume =
Dose on hand
CC/hr = total volume
hours given
gtts/min= vol x gtt factor
time in minutes
:)
