My first CNA job!

Hi all!

I've recently been hired full-time at a LTC facility for the summer until school starts back. It's my first ever CNA job, although I earned by certification the summer before I started nursing school. I was hoping to get a position in my local hospital, but seeing as I've never worked as a CNA before, I wasn't exactly expecting a call! Maybe next summer! :nurse:

However, the facility that extended an offer of employment to me is one that I really like and was my first choice out of LTCs I applied to. I'm very excited about starting this job, but also very nervous!! I am confident in my skills to care for my future clients, but what I'm most nervous about is how the job will actually go routine wise. I sometimes put too much pressure on myself to want to do well - and it's starting to build up in my mind knowing I'll be officially starting soon. I'm starting Saturday! :uhoh21:

I will be working second shift, the hours are 3-11. I'll be with another CNA my first few days to get into the swing of things.

What was your first day like ever working as a CNA? Any tips to help me settle in quickly?

How exciting!! I am also starting a new CNA job at one of our local hospitals in Med/Surg/ortho tomorrow night! I am working 3 12s per week on night shift. I am thrilled, but also a little nervous! I am working with another experienced CNA as well, and hoping I will learn some time management skills pertaining to that area of the hospital from her. I think with any job, it's just a matter of getting into a comfortable and effective routine. Good luck with your new job and congrats on landing it!

You're probably in for a rough ride. It's not easy to be the new girl- there's a lot of info to remember, the pace is faster than you're comfortable with, and some of the staff and residents will give you a hard time. The first few weeks suck for pretty much everyone.

Good luck...I am in orientation all this week. Today was pretty useless and LONG! I start on the floor the 30th Telemetry/Med surg. nervous!

You are right, It's sure going to be rough at first to get in the swing of the job. But- I love fast paced work and have always had hard-working ethics on the job and in school, I like to be busy and a little overwhelmed at times, that's what keeps work interesting for me. I am also going into the RN program this Fall and cannot wait to start working like crazy- it just suits me to a "T". It may suck at first, but that will eventually pass. Thanks for the heads up

I've really enjoyed it! The first few days went by very quickly, and I picked up residents personalities and preferences fairly quickly. My trainer was great and very patient if I had a question; she was around my age, so it made it easier for me to approach her with a question.

The third day was a little hectic, as I was moved over to a different unit. The staff on this unit seems more catty than the other hall; my original hall was very laid back and super friendly with everyone. But on this hall a few of the other CNAs would mumble and say mean things about each other when the other was gone. Makes me wonder if they said anything about me; good thing I don't care.

I'm not at work to make friends, but to do my job and be there for my residents and their needs. :)
