Moving from MI, looking at Nursing Schools

Published

Hello there folks,

So here's my story. I'm pre-nursing. I have a ton of my prereqs done, but getting in to nursing school in michigan is like pulling teeth:banghead:. The auto makers here are offering alot of their employees buyouts and paying for their education, which a ton of them decided to go to for nursing. So with nursing schools already hard to get into, now there's even more competition. Well my husband and I were already talking of moving to Nashville area after I finished school. I'm started to get frustrated, so we talked about moving there sooner. If I don't get into a nursing school in 2009, we want to go ahead and move to TN and I'll try getting into a school there. My question is I know it's hard getting into nursing school period, but in general how long is in taking all of you to get in? Associates or BSN it doesn't matter.Any help is greatly appreciated!!!:)

Some people wait years here in TN as well. There is always a few lucky ones that get in on the first try, but I think that's true everywhere. I've decided to go the LPN route because is so competitive to get in an ASN or BSN program. The colleges here make it a little easier to get into their LPN to BSN or LPN to RN programs.

I'm from Martin, TN (NW area) and am currently a nursing student at University of Tennessee at Martin. It is a BSN program and I love it here. They don't have a wait list or anything and accept approximately 50-60 people to start every fall. If you have a decent GPA (~3.5) and your prereqs mostly done you should be able to get in first try. It isn't an easy program by any means, but they do a good job accepting people into the program. I know it's not Nashville, but it's a good program and the instructors are extremely knowledgeable/helpful. Let me know if I can help anymore.

I got into the nursing program at Chattanooga State my first try (but had to decline) and I'm hoping to get into Roane State my first try.

There is also an online program that is offered at all of them community colleges. I'm applying for that program through Roane State for Fall 2009.

Thanks for the responses. Dee78 are you saying that Roane State has an online program?

Well I have a 3.6 gpa so hopefully thats good enough. I've contacted a few schools via email and requested info to help with my decision. Shord where should I look at LPN to BSN programs, thanks again for all your help.

Actually it's Tennessee board of Regents that has the online program. The community colleges are the home schools for the program, Roane State is the closest to me.

Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University both have LPN to BSN programs. TSU offers their LPN to BSN traditionally or you can do it on the weekends at their AVON Williams campus located in downtown Nashville. MTSU will give unconditional acceptance to an LPN as long as your gpa is at least 2.5. I attended MTSU for prenursing and my advisor told me that once I got into the junior of the program that I needed to apply to all the colleges around that I would be willing to drive to because in reality only a handful of the students are selected for the actual nursing program. Hope this helps.

The online RN program is only for skilled healthcare workers. Meaning you have to be an EMT, LPN, Pharm tech, etc.. If you go to the site and hit apply it will tell you the admission qualifications. Good Luck in your journey. I wish you the best. You will love it here. It's a great place to live and raise a family.

That's true. I'm going to be entering the online CNA program through Tennessee Technology Center this spring. It only takes a few weeks to get your CNA.

Unless TTC's online program is different than taking it traditionally on their campus, their CNA program is from Jan 5th- April 20th for spring 09. Their program is 132 hours and takes longer than the nursing home CNA class. The TTC that I looked at is in Murfreesboro. The other TTC's may be a little different, but if I were you I would call to make sure.

Yes I've been a CNA for almost 10 yrs so that's not an issue. I'll look into this route, I'm also looking into a LPN program here in MI if I get in there, we'll just wait to move to Nashville after I finish, I guess another year wont hurt. Thanks again for all your help.:nuke:

That's great. Do you plan to work as a CNA while in LPN school? I just found out I was accepted into my LPN program today and was wondering whether to do a CNA program and work on the weekends.

Did you try getting into Eastern Michigan University
