I live near Johnson City. I worked for MSHA corp. for a month (it owns J. City Med Center). Although I didn't work for the med center I did have orientation there for a week (for policies and crap). It sounded like a great place to work but then again so did the facility I went to which turned out to be Hell. The med center is pretty big and that's about all I know. Since I worked for MSHA, I guess the pay is the same for all their hospitals. Unfortunately, it sucks. A lot of people say it's because it basically owns so many facilities that it can pay low but there are not much other places to work so people put up with it. The starting pay for new grads is $15 for an RN...that is an embarassing amount! The only school I know about is the middle/high school, which is extremely large...a couple thousand students, which is why I live here where the high school has less than 400. To work for MSHA they make you do like 50 or so computer tests crap.....lots of "homework". Wellmont is another hospital corp. I don't know much about them except some nurse quit MSHA and go there, so maybe it's better there.

East Tennessee is a great place to live and to raise a family. I work at the Johnson City Medical Center and think this is a very good place to work. I have worked there for 10 years now. It has been mentioned that this area is low paying. It must also be taken into consideration that the cost of living is lower in this area....so I think the pay is very decent. A new graduate.....of course, cannot expect a salary of a seasoned nurse with several years of experience.
Technology is leading us into the computer age...and this said, we are utilizing computers in a big way now. Many of the larger hospitals in larger cities have already been involved in the computer technology. I feel like this will be a great advantage to our facility. We are using MAK system in medication dispensing. A good safety implementation.

I am a former Wellmont employee and really enjoyed working there. The only reason I quit is that we moved out of area. Wellmont doesn't make you do the pre-employment pharmacology test like JCMC does.
I used to teach clinicals at JCMC and Specialty Hospital. I absolutely LOVED Specialty Hosp. but there are rarely vacancies there :)
I get paid alot better in SC and the cost of living is the same. However, the nursing shortage isn't as acute in NE TN as here.
Good luck!

hey i'm moving to greeneville in a month in a half and i would love if you knew anything about some jos in the health field up there.
An update on our new computer program MAK... I have just been informed that we have had 250 "saves" since this medication administration safety program has been implemented (January '06-JCMC)!!
I disagree about the nursing shortage here in NE ET. We are using several travel nurses right now and paying big bucks for them. We definitely need nurses. There are HUGE sign on bonuses being offered right now!!!! Wish I were new coming to this area!! Call and find out what you would be eligible for.
MSHA is a good place to work. Contact human resources there and find out if there is a need for your qualifications.
In Greenville....there are 2 hospitals..Laughlin and Tacoma. There is also Home Health available. Greenville is a very nice town. I have relatives living there.
Regarding payrates in ET hospitals...of course it depends upon your education and experience. The best thing would be to call the facility you are interested in and speak to someone in human resources for an idea.
Oh Yeah!!!! Don't forget to ask about the sign on bonuses!
There are 2 hospitals there I think...Laughlin and Takoma Adventist...though I probably spelled both those wrong. I looked into Greeneville before I decided on this area. I visited the town and drove by the hospitals. Nice town but larger than what I was looking for. Look up "Greeneville, TN hospitals" on the internet and see what you get.
